Were any gays offended by Kerry talking about Cheney's Daughter?
I'm hearing a lot of debate about this on MSNBC. They say it was so wrong for Kerry to even mention it. What do the gays think?

2. absolutely not
the hypocrisy in the rightwing is sickening. and for kerry to mention that the opponent team member has a gay daughter, it's only showcasing that hypocrisy.

my mom used to rub our kittens noses in their crap when they pooped where they weren't supposed to. i always thought it was so mean, but they quickly stopped doing it.

Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 11:25 PM by troublemaker
a smear or an ugly tactic.

Immagine if Kerry had said Cheney's daughter was mother to his grandchildren. Would that be UGLY? Would it be "below the belt?"

Think about it... Everyone who's outraged is showing that they think being gay is a categorical negative like being an alcaholic or shoplifter.

nobody on TV even seems able to wrap their head around the idea that gay doesn't equal shameful.

6. I'm gay
and I wasn't offended at all. She's made herself a public figure, and she's been out of the closet for many years. The Cheney's use her in their campaign - it's a fair point to make.

If one of the Heinz boys was gay (don't I wish!), you can be sure we'd hear about it non-stop.

17. Thanks for the response. Pubs are saying this was so wrong.
I just wanted to find out what the gay community thought. I suspected they saw through this idiocy, but I can't answer it, and you can. Thanks.

27. Not at all offended; Kerry bring it on!!!
I thought it was great that Kerry not only expressed his humane views on the subject, but pointed out just one of so many blatant hypocrisies of this group. And what he said about family values, and Christ's Love one another commandment were two others. The Christian right has left me with such a foul taste in my mouth. A Christian would so favor the rich? A Christian would take us into a war with not much fore-thought, and little after-thought with no acceptance of an obvious mistake? A Christian would have a criminal as Vice President? These phony Christians care about money, taxes and property. I hope that in the upcoming days, Kerry continues to drive home these points, especially Halliburton's role in Food for Oil when he was CEO. I hate these pigs who value oil more than lives. Shame on them. Kerry spoke the truth. That is Christian.

11. His comment was appropriate and welcome...
He tried to empathize, rather than lecture morality. Do we (gays) think we are okay and born the way God intended? Of course we do and that is what John was saying. How could it be offensive to anyone, I don't know.

12. No. Should I be ashamed of her?
If my father was running as a Repug CEO of Iraq, then I dont know what I'd do, but it would have nothing to do with being gay.

13. She's out. Kerry clearly has no problem with gays/lesbians. His policies..
...will help gays and lesbians imensely in terms of building up wealth, gaining rights, and living happy lives without the friction of non-sensical unconstitutional BS.

What's to be mad about?

14. It's kind of like not mentioning the black guy's color.
Predjudiced people are the first to holler about the indignity of mentioning the sources of their bias.

"God forbid! How dare he mention Cheney's gay daughter. He has ANOTHER daughter. Why did he mention THAT daughter? How disrespectful!"

I say, "To who?"

18. I'm not gay, but I will say this
I think it's an indication of prejudice for someone like Pat Bu-fucking-chanon to say it was horrible that they mentioned her.

Why Pat?? Why??

Because her sexuality is something you find deplorable and awful?

Not to be talked about in the same ease as a straight daughter (who WAS allowed on the RNC stage with Cheney btw, along with the whole family EXCEPT Mary)?

Sad.

21. absolutely not
She's out. She's been out since at least 2000. Cheney has openly talked about it.

Kerry was pointing out (in perhaps, clumsy terms) that everyone knows a gay person, and that we should be treated with respect and fairness.

22. The question was about homosexuality. He answered perfectly.
But Cheney's daughter is a LESBIAN? OMG! Why is this not common knowledge?

Fellow gay pals, is it not hysterical when people like Buchanan and gang are livid...livid I tell you about gay rights and who should be talked about? Imagine that, they care about us SO much, to not want any harm to come to us. I feel so happy that they care about us sooooo much.

28. Doesn't Buchanan have a gay daughter or sister or
someone, too? Or is that Newt Gingrich I'm thinking of? Or both?

I could be wrong. I don't pay a whole lot of attention to the sexual orientation of individuals, none of my business. Live and let live, civil unions for all and religious "marriage" for those who want it whether straight or gay. But then, I'm straight so I could be wrong on that, too.

No proud gay person or supportive family would be embarrassed by saying they are gay. I think it shows their hypocrisy.

26. No way. What's offensive is treating your own daughter like a dirty secret
And actively supporting policies that would have a direct negative impact on your nearest and (supposedly) dearest just for the sake of power. Pfft. Kerry was right to make them squirm. I'm sorry for Mary Cheney somewhat, but you know what, she has a voice, too. She hasn't been using it. Seriously, if I had a father like Dick Cheney, I would *not* be as meekly loyal as she's been. It must be like being Satan's daughter, I don't know. And Lynn, well...Lynn. Fuck 'em, the nasty secretive shaming hypocrites.
