I'm OFFENDED That People Are "Offended" by Kerry's Mary Cheney Comment
Repeat after me: THere is nothing wrong with being gay. It is morally neutral. To be "offended" by someone mentioning the affectional hardwired orientation of an OUT lesbian is to not so implicitly state that you think there is something NEGATIVE about being gay.

What Kerry was doing was pointing out the sheer ugliness and hypocrisy of the Republican political position on this. Period.

Mary Cheney was an out lesbian BEFORE her father even took office. Would we be offended by someone discussing the fact that she is left handed????

1. I just can't imagine who they thought didn't know this fact?
You're right, of course, their taking offense is , in itself offensive and insulting to Gays.

2. I'm surprised so many here are offended???
I knew that Cehney's daughter was a lesbian in the 2000 election, and at the time I didnt know much about politics...

Ok, so its bad to out someone if they are in the closet, but she wasn't...

I dont get it!?!?!

3. Exactly! Mary Cheney is not some dirty little secret to hide away.
Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 11:34 PM by Lex
Jeez. She's a grown-up, OUT lesbian, who is being made into a 2nd class citizen by Bush/Cheney's own policies.

Nothing wrong with pointing out the hypocrisy of that to Bush and America.

People want Mary whispered about like she was some kind of disease. Well, f that.

8. Huh? They were all over Edwards! Hypocrites now AND then
They just don't want it mentioned that Mary Cheney is gay. They'd prefer it if she didn't mention it either. Unfortunately for them, her father ignored their memo on the subject.

7. i agree
they're ashamed to admit that they have gay kids who are discriminated against by their own policies, and that's sickening.

9. I found it to be a little cheap and hamfisted myself
Both Edwards and Cheney brought it up solely for the political effect it would garner. They both could have easily made their point without specifically naming Mary Cheney.

Ok, flame on!

15. You're forgetting
that Dick Cheney himself said his daughter was gay a few weeks ago during a town hall meeting. It's ok for him to say it but not anyone else? It's a fact of life. It's like saying she has red hair in response to a question of why Republicans are pushing an anti-red haired amendment to the constitution.

16. Kerry doesn't think there's anything wrong with being gay.
In his words, it's just how God makes people.

I don't think it was cheap at all.

10. They are oblivious to their own hypocrisy. It is remarkable that they
think this is an attack point.

12. If they were discussing the hatred against
another group, such as the Irish or Indians, and Kerry spoke about an Irish or Indian person to illustrate how unfair hatred is to individuals, no one would dare call it "unfair" or a "low blow."

13. Not offended, a valid point point, BUT
Edwards had already used it effectively and I think a better point about about the proposed amendment could be made. It projected that she held a opinion and I don't really know where Cheney's daughter thinks about this issue.

18. i am offended they are offended
that their daughter is gay. my husband and my response was in support of not using mary thinking we were being sensitive to her, until this point was brought up and now i see i was looking at it wrong. you can say she is gay out loud, and we shouldnt have an issue with it. the issue is that the repugs have a problem with gay. not the dems. and saying the gay word is not offensive, only if you see homosexuality as offensive

i agree strongly kerry needs to take this point. instead of apologizing for his comment. an apology would be even more offensive. i like how sullivan put it best

my point is many are going to be with the repugs on this thinking they are being sensitive to cheney but the reality it is a flip flop, this point has to be put out so the people like me can see the offense is that they are offended
