BRIDGER-TETON LEASE PLAN ON HOLD
Good news for some of the last roadless areas of the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem: the Forest Service has suspended its plan to offer leases for oil and gas drilling in more than 125,000 acres in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. The decision followed a vigorous outcry from activists including BioGems Defenders, as well as formal objections from NRDC and other groups. We'll keep you posted on any further developments.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN VICTORY
Due in large part to overwhelming public opposition, the Bureau of Land Management has halted the permitting process for drilling natural gas wells in the Blackleaf area of Montana's Rocky Mountain Front. During a recent comment period, 99 percent of the responses -- including more than 21,000 messages from BioGems Defenders -- criticized the proposal, which would have caused lasting damage to outstanding habitat for grizzly bears and other wildlife. The agency may still study this area for energy development in the future, so NRDC will continue to monitor it until permanent protections are in place.

When the American buffalo rebounded from near-extinction and gray wolves returned to the wild, they found their refuge in the tawny grasslands and pine-covered ridges of Yellowstone National Park. When grizzly bears lost most of their habitat to logging and development, the northern Rockies provided them with the thousands of square miles of wild forests and meadows they needed to survive. Without the vast stretches of Rockies wilderness, where will the next species go to be replenished?

This has become an urgent question, thanks to the Bush administration's push to plunder some of America's most treasured Rocky Mountain landscapes. NRDC's legal actions have slowed down some of the most reckless activities, but the administration's efforts to open this region to energy development, mining, logging, snowmobiling and other harmful activities continue.

With the help of BioGems Defenders, we are working to block the Bush administration from opening Yellowstone to polluting snowmobiles and from prematurely removing Yellowstone grizzlies from the endangered species list. And we are fighting to stop the slaughter of America's last free-roaming buffalo, which face death each time they wander near the park's limits. We also have called on you to help block destructive energy projects in Wyoming's Red Desert, New Mexico's Otero Mesa, Montana's Rocky Mountain Front and other wild western lands. Now we need you to speak out against proposed harmful gas drilling in Colorado's HD Mountains.

Tell the Forest Service to prohibit harmful gas drilling in the most fragile areas of the HD Mountains.

The fact that they'd even consider drilling in Greater Yellowstone shows what kind of administration we are dealing with in terms of environmental issues.

I was up in New Mexico for some weeks helping the League of Conservation Voters in their ground war there.

I personally delivered a number of new Kerry voters...

Please help if you can in this swing state or any of these swing states:
