The Hoopla over Mary Cheney |
|
Lest we forget, John Kerry (or John Edwards, for that matter) didn't bring Mary Cheney into this race. About a month ago her father, ol' Crashcart himself, made a speech that was broadcast on national television that he had changed his mind about a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and admitted that his own daughter, a lesbian, had a lot to do with his decision.
Obviously, Ol' Crashcart was just trying to win back the Log Cabin Republicans that they had just lost, but Dick himself is the one that introduced Mary Cheney into this campaign. Neither Kerry nor Edwards made any comment that could in any way be construed as negative towards Mary Cheney or her parents.
The question was "do you believe homosexuality is a choice?" Bush said, as he often does when he doesn't want to answer a question, "I don't know." Kerry said, "I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who she was, she's being who she was born as."
They answered the question that they were asked. Kerry used Cheney's daughter to emphasize his answer that he didn't think it is a choice. If it were a choice, I seriously doubt that the daughter of a high-profile right-winger like Crashcart would choose to be gay.

My point is Kerry doesn't need to apologize because he did nothing wrong by bringing up Mary Cheney.
Right-wingers are adamantly anti-gay. That's why Bush wouldn't answer the question.
They are also adamantly anti-abortion. Again, that's why Bush wouldn't answer the question "would you work to overturn Roe v Wade?"
If he answered either question he runs the risk of losing his base, the right-wingers, or losing the swing voters, most of whom are pro-choice and don't see gay people as any different than straight people.

3. Kerrry Named Mary because he was answering the question |
|
The question was - do you think gay Americans choose to be gay.
Say someone was sitting home, thinking to themselves - yes, yes they do choose to be gay.
Kerry says, here is the most persuasive evidence that gays do not choose to be gay. Mary, the daughter of a high-profile right-winger like Cheney.
Mary is not estranged from her parents, they are quite close. Do you think if Mary wants to please her parents, wants to make their life easier? Do you think if Mary could choose whether to be gay, she would choose not to be gay - would that not please her parents, and make their life easier with their RW crowd?
No other example would prove Kerry's point, or answer the question as effectively.

4. Just the fact there is a "hoopla",... |
|
by those on the right, proves how hung up they are about even talking about homosexuality.
They say it was "tacky" and a "low blow" because of their own negative views and uncomfortable feelings.
It's called "projection" in psychology.
