Just reread Kerry's comments re: Mary Cheney. WHAT'S THE BIG F'ING DEAL?
Edited on Thu Oct-14-04 09:39 AM by MallRat
KERRY: We're all God's children, Bob. And I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who she was, she's being who she was born as.

That's it. No backhanded swipes at the Vice-President or Bush. No gratuitous slam of White House policy. Nada.

It is clearer to me now, more than ever, that the Republicans are DESPERATELY trying to make an issue out of nothing.

3. Remember that Lynne Cheney is paid by the RNC to be Outraged
She is professionally Outraged, and has been so this whole campaign season, as evidenced by all of her TV appearances trashing John Kerry in the last 6 months or so.

4. If not this, then something else. Who cares?
They had to pick one or two words to take out of context, and "Lesbian" was it. Remember "global test" -- be afraid, because it means the Scary French are in charge, when the context of the remark was about being honest. I laugh at their lesbian stuff, and applaud Kerry for exposing their hypocrisy! Yeah, Kerry! :)

5. manufactured outrage
their stock in trade. they think if they squeal long and hard enough about this that they can create a controversy. The delicious thing about it, though, is it puts them in the position of speaking out on behalf of gay people, which will alienate lots of fundie whackjobs. What to do? Pretty masterful counter-strategy on the Republicans' anti-gay strategy, IMHO.

6. The deal is THEY'VE GOT NOTHING.
They're desperate.

Kerry stated a fact, and they're trying to suggest he's getting "personal."

Forgetting, of course, the many comments they've made about Kerry's looks, ability to speak French, choices of sports, honorable military service, wealth, and wife.

SOP for the GOP.

7. This Is Their ONLY Remaining Hope...Desperate Times, Desperate Measures...
... and this is the ONLY debate moment that they have to try and attack Kerry on.

Consider this: the only people who think that this is important, and the only people who are just NOW finding out about Mary Cheney would have voted for Bush anyway.

This is NOT an issue.

The DU-Chicken-Littles need to get a clue and move on. The sky is NOT falling.

13. Fox News talking head said Kerry "outed" daughter
apparently missing Cheney-Edwards debate and the entire last four years.

The outrage is that Kerry points out the scandal--not of being lesbian, but that pubbies hate one of their own for being a lesbian.

12. This is definitely a button for them....
and the Kerry campaign seems to want to push it, viz both he AND Edwards mentioning her by name in the debates. There must be something strategic going on here. Unless it's just button-pushing for the sake of pissing them off... which I suppose could also be strategic.

It's fascinating to me... she's an OUT lesbian working for the campaign and yet their attitude seems to be, "DON'T TALK ABOUT IT. What a nasty thing to say." What? It's the OPEN TRUTH.

it is a non-issue. Our best response is to laugh and redirect to minimum wage or RvW.

15. The assumtion of their "outrage"
is that calling someone gay is an insult, or that being a lesbian is shameful. I would think that it's pretty easy to turn the table on this one.

16. The word "lesbian" is very distracting to many...
In fact, you can fixate on "lesbian" so much that you can ignore the war in Iraq, the economy, education and health care!!

This tactic really works with pinheads. A zillion years ago, Claude Pepper (well respected Florida dem congressman) lost a race in part because the repugs told folks that his sister was a "thespian."

Ironically, his sister was in fact a thespian. In those days, repugs weren't into simply lying about everything.

17. Anything to distract people from the record.
These are desperate men with an abysmal record. They need any distraction they can find to keep people from focusing on that record.

It is interesting to note that Dick Cheney can bring up the subject in public at a staged town hall event but when anyone else does it it's considered an "attack". I guess the Cheney's pride in their daughter only runs so deep. He's proud to use her for political purposes to show he's a compassionate conservative then push her back into the closet when there's nothing to gain.

Did anyone hear that this morning. Obiously such people have some serious hang-ups. How could it possibly be rude to mention her? It's because she's gay, right? Hmmm. Whose problem is that?

24. yes, and interestingly enough it is being replayed for people to draw
the same conclusions...Mr. and Mrs. Cheney ...what is your problem...Truly you are not ashamed of your daughter's sexuality..Truly you do not "blame" yourself for this..Truly you do not blame God...Our gift of sexuality is our own...whatever it is.
