Elizabeth Edwards nails Lynn Cheney on ABC Radio
ELIZABETH EDWARDS ACCUSES LYNNE CHENEY OF "SHAME" OF HER DAUGHTER, QUESTIONS HER CRITICISM OF KERRY'S MARY CHENEY REFERENCE

ELIZABETH EDWARDS ON ABC RADIO: "She's overreacted to this and treated it as if it's shameful to have this discussion. I think that's a very sad state of affairs… I think that it indicates a certain degree of shame with respect to her daughter's sexual preferences… It makes me really sad that that's Lynne's response."

This doesn't infer that it's a choice. I prefer breathing oxygen to breathing chlorine gas, but that doesn't mean I can choose between the two--I am only physically capable of breathing oxygen. See?

:)

21. BINGO!!!
Edited on Thu Oct-14-04 11:25 AM by NightOwwl
MSNBC just played the clip of Lynne Cheney:
"Now, you know, I did have a chance to assess John Kerry once more and now the only thing I could conclude: This is not a good man," she said. "Of course, I am speaking as a mom, and a pretty indignant mom. This is not a good man. What a cheap and tawdry political trick."

Why is what Kerry said so "cheap and tawdry"? Her daugher is gay. So either she is ashamed of her daughter's sexual preference (which is very sad), or SHE is the one using her daughter for political purposes as a way to accuse Kerry of crossing the line.

I mean, let's say the Cheneys had an African-American daughter, and Kerry mentioned her in an answer to a question about racial inequality. Would this shame and embarrass Lynne Cheney?

So she is full of bull, and she is the one who should be ashamed of blatenty using her daughter for purely political purposes.

24. Sorry, I Didn't Like This
I didn't like it when Edwards did it, I didn't like it when Kerry did it. Leave Cheney's daughter out of it.

Our candidates brought up Cheney's daughter for political reasons. Period. While it is fair to say that Bush/Cheney deserve this for their hypocrisy on the whole issue regarding homosexuality, I still don't like it because I am not sure it is fair to Cheney's daughter. Just because she is open about her sexual orientation does not mean she wants to be a political pawn for either side. That being said, who are the Republicans to criticize? They are using homosexuality as a wedge issue with utter disregard for the fact that homosexuals are their parents, siblings, children, friends, etc. Why are they getting self righteous now?

Still, I expect better Democrats to be better than Republicans.

Edited on Thu Oct-14-04 11:58 AM by Lex
to "rally" their base, and have even proposed changing the Constitution to discriminate against homosexuals.

Kerry and Edwards merely pointed out how it is hurting many people, even members of the VP's own family.

Sorry, but when the REPUBLICANS decided to use this as an issue, they ran the risk of Mary Cheney being a part of the discussion.

29. You Are Right If You Look At It Politically
My point is, is that fair to Mary Cheney? She didn't ask to be gay. I assume she didn't ask her father to run for office. I don't imagine she asked the GOP to use this as a wedge issue.

She has to hurt enough without this. She was open about her sexuality but didn't ask to be a political figure.

30. She probably didn't ask her father to run for office
But she DID work for Coors Brewing as their director or coordinator of relations with the gay community. She IS drawing a salary as an operative for the Bush-Cheney campaign. She IS making personal public appearances in support of her father's run for office. And she IS a big girl, all grown up and able to speak for herself.

This isn't a question of politics, semantics, propriety or anything else. Kerry made a factual statement concerning a member of the family of one of the candidates. He spoke of her as a person, accorded her the dignity she is entitled to, and the Republicans are out of their collective mind having to deal with it.

Bigotry is so inconvenient for them when it bites them in the ass.

If Lynne Cheney wasn't ashamed, it wouldn't have even come up.

Anyway, the Dickman had already brought it up in public so why the big deal now. Is he a "bad man" for doing so? Inquiring minds want to know!!

39. That's A Horse Of A Different Color
I mean, if she is working for the campaign, she is fair game. In fact, being gay and working for them she is the Jew in Hitler's Army (don't read anything too much into that analogy, not trying to start another, er, flame)

38. I didn't "ask" to be gay either
nor did I request to be female, or white, or hazel eyed, or smart...

I hope you get my point. Mary is gay. So what? Everybody who is treating this observation like it is some hush hush thing is obviously homophobic in some sense, whether or not they admit it or even realize it.

Mary Cheney is part of the campaign machine, so the argument that she didn't ask to be a political figure is moot. The only reason her and my lifestyle is in play this election year is because her father and his puppet have made discriminating against us a campaign issue to whip up their bigoted base. Their bad, not Kerry's, not Edward's.

36. wrong. She made herself a political pawn when she served as a liason
to the gay community for Coors, a company that supported the very homophobic Jesse Helms who called AIDS a punishment from God and a company that supported the ultra right wing Heritage Foundation. She also made herself AND her sexuality a pawn when she served on the Republican UNity Coalition...on behalf of gay Republican apparatchiks...this is not Chelsea Clinton...this is NOT the Bush girls who "just wanna have fun" ...this is someone who HAS used her gayness to get votes....there was NOTHING tacky about bringing her up...she is a political figure who HAPPENS to be the VP's daughter.

33. It seem to me the Bush
campaign has used Cheney's daughter to have it both ways on this issue. You have the president wanting to ban gay marriage to rally his evangelical base and you have the VP during the debate have heartfelt moment were he talks about his gay daughter in order to soften his persona and sway the moderates. Cheney has used his own daughter as a political football in this election.

Now Lynn Cheney wants to cry foul which is just more of the same, using her daughter to further the campaign. I don't buy any of their crap, its all a dog and pony show to win votes.

I'm glad we have a smart down to earth woman like Mrs Edwards to counter their BS.

42. Exactly!
My first thought when I heard Lynne Cheney was "indignant" was, "If you aren't ashamed of your daughter, why are you indignant?" The Repubs are the ones making gays an issue and it's a little hypocritical to not acknowledge that gays are apt to be on any family tree.
