shrub and laura both in NJ tomorrow?! |
|
Just heard this on WNYC news brief.
Strange. Do they really think they can take NJ or are they just feinting?
Why spend a valuable day in a state where their shot at winning is far less than in Ohio, Florida, Wisconsin, Iowa etc.

They have no chance in NJ. Remember, Chimpy campaigned in CA near the end of the 2000 election to get people to think the election was going to be a blowout so Dem turnout would be down. This is nothing more than a Rovian ploy.

3. That's an omen of striking proportions ... |

The polls show it's clear that he hasn't yet shored up Ohio, Florida, Colorado, Nevada, N.H., etc., yet he's willing to dive deep into deep-blue country. The only possible explanation might be the ability to pop up in the eastern Pa. media market.
Is it a thinly veiled concession-by-geography?

"The only possible explanation might be the ability to pop up in the eastern Pa. media market."
I don't know. I do know that Kerry's Philadelphia advertising has helped him significantly in South Jersey where he has a strong lead.
But I am not aware of any media links between NJ and eastern PA, other than the Newark area media. If that's what shrub is counting on, it still does not warrant a full day of day there, more or less.
Anyway, Kerry lead in PA is almost as strong as in NJ.

4. New Jersey is closer than I'd like it to be |
|
Gore won here in 2000 by 16 points. Currently, Kerry's lead is under 8. New Jersey is, obviously, next door to New York, and was shaken by Sept. 11. Todd Beamer was from my town. A certain number of New Jerseyans appear to have bought into the Bushrovian lie that only Bush has kept us "safe" from another attack (ignoring the fact that, if that were really true, why does he have to keep scaring us about another attack?)
Also ignoring that he really has done nothing to secure this state: nothing on port security (New Jersey has some of the biggest and most active ports in the country), nothing on rail security, nothing on bridge and highway security (there are rail & highway nexuses in northern NJ that, if destroyed, would bring this country's commerce to a standstill).
That said, Kerry is almost certainly going to win NJ, but by pretending to be competitive here, perhaps Bush thinks he can force Kerry to defend in NJ, thus reducing Kerry's time and resources to fight in other states.
