City attorney: Duval County can't open early voting sites

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- A city attorney said Wednesday that it is too late to open four more early voting sites in Duval County next week, even as the city council voted to urge elections officials to do just that.

The Jacksonville City Council voted early Wednesday to give the supervisors of elections office $100,000 to pay for early voting booths at four libraries.

Elections officials had argued they did not have enough time, staff or equipment to get the sites set up and tested before the Nov. 2 general election. Early voting in Jacksonville will be available only at the downtown office when it starts statewide on Monday.

Duval County, with 500,000 registered voters, is the largest county in the state with only one site, something Democratic National Chairman Terry McAuliffe called "outrageous."
