How predictable -- CNN is running with the Mary Cheney story
Following the GOP talking points to a "t", CNN's Inside Politics has declared Kerry's name dropping of Mary Cheney to be THE flashpoint of the debate. Far more important, it appears, than anything the candidates said about the minimum wage, jobs, health care, etc.

Am I the only one who thinks that Inside Politics should be preceded by a soundbyte of Bush saying "I'm George Bush, and I approve this message"?

5. that's what the mary cheney bullshit is for

to hide the bin laden remark. that, and try to get at the "uncomfortable with gays in their *own* family" moderates among the swing voters. plenty of those to go around. if they can spin it as an attack on their "family," which is what they're furiously working at, they feel they can gain quite a lot of ground. they still get to have it both ways. to many of the moderates, they are "protecting" their gay daughter. to the fundie nutcase republican base, they are outraged that kerry would take such a horrible cheap shot at them. after all, it's not *their* fault their daughter has chosen a disgusting, selfish, hedonistic lifestyle.

that this "attack" is simply acknowledging the sexual orientation of someone who is open about it is not particularly relevent to their target audience. this is about sound bites, not actual ethics.

3. If CNN wants to keep reminding the fundies of this, great!

Think about it. The more focus on this issue, the more fundies who will be reminded that a vote for Bush/Cheney is a vote for lesbianism, and maybe stay home. Or some other illogical fundie homophobic viewpoint. But I just don't see how it hurts Kerry.

4. Has anyone asked Mary Cheney what she thinks about it?
Kerry's comment was a compliment on her sexual orientation.

10. And this is from Kerry himself...
today in Las Vegas..what he was saying..

“I love my daughters. They love their daughter. I was trying to say something positive about the way strong families deal with this issue.”

Desperation..
time again by Bushco. Making a big deal over nothing. I suggest gay people all over the world speak up and put in your 2 cents about Kerry's remarks. I as a gay man say that Kerry said nothing crass nor disrepectful towards Mary or the Cheney family. Remember, Mary is in the public spotlight as are Jenna and Babs Bush and Kerry's and Edwards' children as well, so they're fair game to the media and the public--good or bad. If anyone politicized gay marriages or relationships is Bush and his right-winged nutcases.

11. They've made it news
Clearly, CNN has to cover it because the right has been releasing shitty statements left and right. On the other hand, I loved that CNN showed the Log Cabin Republicans upbraiding Bush and Cheney for using homosexuality as a wedge issue to divide the voters. I think that could have more impact than the garbage they're spewing about Kerry, who, face it, said a POSITIVE thing about Cheney's daughter - unless, of course, one considers mentioning that a person is gay to be shameful, as poor Mary's mother obviously does.

i just emailed cnn and expressed to them how this indignation should have been present from the day shrubbie brought up the anti-marriage amendment.

until they assail alan keyes publicly, it's just a publicity stunt...and i think it'll be forgotten in a week.

15. Kerry needs to take control of this issue and turn it against Bush!
This is one of those times when we need to take their fake "outrage" and turn the issue back against them.

This is the reason Kerry has "strategists" and they had better earn their money by finding a way to turn this whole thing back against Bush right away!

19. AND WE NEED TO HELP HIM
Every time you hear BS on TV, get on your computer and fire off a short, concise email. If you are foolish enough to be watching FAUX news, you can make it pithy as well.

The media is just like a politician--they PANDER to their base. If you don't voice your complaints, they will keep spouting the same old conventional stupidity. Challenge them--if enough of us do it, they WILL adjust their coverage.

Don't rely on the Kerry strategists alone--they are obviously carrying water for their candidate. The lame stream media needs to hear from WE THE PEOPLE. Every damn one of us!

18. Hehehe

Oh, their internal polls must show * sinking like a stone.

This will be dead by tomorrow, perhaps Saturday. Then people will remember that they don't have jobs and that everything costs too much - - if they're even listening to this garbage in the first place.

20. Here's a post from a political forum that wraps it all up neatly...
"Let's see . . . Alan Keyes specifically calls Mary Cheney a "sinful, selfish hedonist" for being a lesbian, and Lynn Cheney is silent.

Dick Cheney brings up his own daughter's name, but says despite his supposed personal thoughts, he will still support the President's call for a Constitutional Amendment banning gay marriage. Lynn Cheney remains silent.

John Kerry says Mary Cheney is one of God's children, and should be free to be who she is, with visitation/benefits/inheritance rights just like anyone else, and Lynn Cheney is horribly offended.

Yes, Lynn, I think we're starting to get a pretty good picture of your opinion, after all."

This shit's okay on: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/10/14/13749/196

And they're wasting time defending Mrs. Cheney's hypocrisy?

I think the title of Metallica's first album provides some excellent advice in dealing with media whores.
