HELP!!! MY SCHOOL IS TRYING TO SHUT DOWN OUR F-9/11 SCREENING!
My university is trying to shut down my organization (College Democrats) from showing F-9/11 claiming that we need a license for tonight! I'm trying to explain that Moore has said you can show the movie for free, but I'm not sure they are buying it. Lion Gates Films and Dog Eat Dog Productions don't have phone numbers listed (understandably) but if anyone knows the number for either, could you shoot me a private message? I would greatly appreciate it.

1. Tell them to call the cops
It'll get some media attention, and certainly Moore's attention.

15. I sorta agree with this one. . .

I'd get a copy of Moore's general permission from the website and
show it anyway. Follow up with an email to Moore and a letter, if possible. Then, if the local Nazis give you trouble, tell them to call the cops. You're guaranteed to get national attention. This
will also call attention to the disagreement between Lion's Gate and
Moore about making F-9/11 as publicly available as possible.

This is truly one of those things that makes me wonder. The more
people that see this, the more people will buy it. So Lion's Gate
will end up making out like a bandit on this.

I wonder why they are being such a**holes about a student viewing?

14. Yeah, Michael Moore says show it at colleges and universities
"3. Sponsor Large Community or School Screenings. You have my permission. Don't charge money (unless everyone has to chip in for the union hall or church basement). Invite everyone; pack the place. Have something for people to do afterwards, like volunteering for a "get out the vote" drive between now and November 2nd."

We aren't charging money. I'm sending this in an E-mail.

5. Postpone..
it for a few days or a week and see if you can have a screening party off-campus. Secretly distribute flyers/invites to all who are interested in attending. And at the same time write a letter along with student signatures condemning the school for not allowing the showing and send it to the university's Dean and/or President. Give the school some bad publicity if you have to.

6. Have you read the disclaimers?
It probably says that you can show the movie so long as you or your organization is not trying to profit from the screening.

10. Not true, for private viewing yes, for public viewing

the decision fails with Lions Gate not Micheal Moore, and they are real assholes.

22. Private/public
Private use can be in public places. So using public university viewing space and showing film IS lawful, especially when combined with a discussion before/after/both which is 'scholarly'. Moore is advocating and promoting such use, as folks have said in posts all around here.

9. If you are showing on campus it is illiegal, it violates copywrite laws
Edited on Thu Oct-14-04 02:29 PM by Melodybe
Private showings are different, in your home, dorm room, apartment complex, etc.

You could get sued, Lions Gate were real assholes when I called them. There is a $700 fee to show F9/11 in a public showing, your university.

Lions Gate is listed though, call LA information and ask for Lions Gate, then ask to speak to their coordinator for movies on campus, he is a real dick.

We went through the same fiasco to get F9/11 at Ole Miss. Luckily for us the Campus Programming lady in charge of showing movies, helped and got the majority paid for. You need to find that person on your campus and talk to them. Most colleges have a deal with production companies to show movies.

Do NOT show this movie without consent, I hate to be a wet blanket, but the guys at Lions Gate was very firm about you getting sued.

11. Actually SONY PICTURES owns the rights to the video release, so
you should be able to get rights from them.

Here's their information

Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.
711 Fifth Avenue
New York, New York 10022
(212) 702-6519

And here's the site I found it on. Good information there...

If you have to pay a fee, I bet DU will chip in to cover it (I know I will)

12. ask them if they make professors get licences EVERY time
they show a film. I seriously doubt it. make a stink about it. then show it privately. that ought to get private screening attendance up.

19. Apparently professors never have to have a licences
I think it's because they show their movies in a classroom setting and not in a publi forum.
