Don't you think that they are making such a fuss because Mary is seen by them as "theirs". In other words, Lynn Cheney feels like "She belongs to us, WE can talk about her all we want to, trot her out when appropriate to make us look human, force her into the closet when creating necessary social wedge issues". etc.

But when Kerry mentions her, to make a point that even people in the GOP can be humans too ("See? Dick's not calling for the death of his own daughter!"), the GOP says "Hands off!! She's OUR lesbian. Go get your OWN lesbian, you bad, bad, opportunistic man".
