Wearing my name proudly tonight, cuz my peeps have come through BIG TIME

RealCountryMusic

Lyrics:

TAKIN' MY COUNTRY BACK

COUNTRY MUSIC'S GOT MAMAS AND DADDYS
WE GOT BAR ROOMS AND OLD HEARTBREAK SONGS
BUT I 'M HERE TODAY TO STAND UP AND SAY
HOW I FEEL ABOUT MY HOME SWEET HOME
WHAT'S LEFT, WHAT'S RIGHT AND WHAT'S WRONG... AND

I’M TAKIN’ MY COUNTRY BACK
SON, YOU AIN'T BEEN DOIN’ HER RIGHT
OH I BEEN WATCHIN’ YOU AND I DON’T LIKE
HOW YOU'VE BEEN TREATIN’ MY STARS AND STRIPES
YOU TOOK OUR JOBS AND SENT ‘EM OVERSEAS
NOW WE OWE BILLIONS TO THE RED CHINESE
YOU BLEW THE BUDGET AND YOU BOTCHED IRAQ
SO I’M TAKIN’ MY COUNTRY BACK

WE HAD A BUNDLE IN THE TREASURY DRAWER
MORE THAN THERE HAD EVER BEEN BEFORE
BUT EVERY DAY WE'RE DROWNIN' DEEPER IN DEBT
MAYBE FOUR YEARS SHOULD BE ALL YOU GET
THEN YOU GAVE TAX BREAKS TO THE MILLIONAIRES
AND TRIED TO MAKE THE WORKIN’ MAN PAY
BUT YOU CAN’T TAX A MAN WHEN HIS JOBS NOT THERE
NOW LOOK AT WHERE WE ARE TODAY…HEY

I’M TAKIN’ MY COUNTRY BACK
SON, YOU AIN'T BEEN DOIN’ HER RIGHT
OH I BEEN WATCHIN’ YOU AND I DON’T LIKE
HOW YOU'VE BEEN TREATIN’ MY STARS AND STRIPES
YOU GOT TOO MANY FANCY FRIENDS FOR ME
THE SAUDIS TREAT YOU LIKE YOU'RE ROYALTY
YOU BLEW THE BUDGET AND YOU BOTCHED IRAQ
NOW I’M TAKIN’ MY COUNTRY BACK

NOW I CAN UNDERSTAND WHY YOU WERE HOT
'CAUSE BIN LADEN NEVER DID GET CAUGHT
SO YOU SAID WE HAD SADDAM TO BLAME
TRIED TO TELL US IT WAS ALL THE SAME
BUT NOW THE YEARS ROLL BY AND OUR KIDS KEEP DYIN'
YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE A PLAN TO BRING 'EM HOME
AND THOSE W.M.D. YOU PROMISED ON T.V.
HEY ADMIT IT, YOU FIGURED IT WRONG... SO I'M TAKIN' MY COUNTRY BACK

NOW YOU DON’T KNOW MY NAME, BUT YOU KNOW WHO I AM
I'M YOUR EVERYDAY WORK HARD, PLAY HARD
RAISE KIDS AND PRAY HARD COMMON MAN....
AND LORD KNOWS I LOVE THIS LAND...THAT'S WHY

I’M TAKIN’ MY COUNTRY BACK
SON, YOU AIN'T BEEN DOIN’ HER RIGHT
OH I BEEN WATCHIN’ YOU AND I DON’T LIKE
HOW YOU'VE BEEN TREATIN’ MY STARS AND STRIPES
YOU SAY "UNITE" BUT YOU DIVIDE US MORE
CUSSIN' EACH OTHER ON THE SENATE FLOOR
AIN'T WE SUPPOSED TO BE ABOVE ALL THAT ?
HEY I’M TAKIN’ MY COUNTRY BACK
I GOT MY FAMILY AND MY CHURCH AND FLAG...
NOW I'M TAKIN' MY COUNTRY BACK

someone quite major league. I'm almost positive I know who it is. But the site is making a point, it seems, of keeping the creators anonymous -- I'll bet there would be some *serious* retribution in Nashville over this. It will probably happen anyway, but I'm not outing them just because I'm a former insider.

Email this to every red-state pickup driving stock-car dad you know. I just did, and I know A LOT OF THEM. We could make this an internet hit with enough mass mailing. The song is that good -- real country, well produced, expertly played and sung. It's a lot longer than a typical radio hit, but every verse works, and the chorus has a hell of a hook, especially with that "friends in low places" singalong.

Please help me on this! I swear by every picker's bone in my road-tested body (10 years as a pro country sideman) that this could make a difference if it picked up steam in states that matter.

Two-stepping truth, honky-tonk truth!

SEND THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW WHO MIGHT BE AT ALL INTO COUNTRY MUSIC.

53. im glad this song is out there, but i disagree that it is 'well done'
if it rose to the level of 'well done' it wouldnt sound like country music because the composition would be too complex

it isnt complex, its country

Actually I know a lot of gay country fans and musicians. That's one prejudice you won't hear too much of in Nashville, in my experience. It's a major market for the music.

Kudos for being proud of it.

19. Neither, to me

I love Steve, but he hasn't written a straight ahead honky-tonker like this since . . since never, actually. And the politics are more populist and straightforward than Earle's, which is why they will appeal if distributed.

The singer doesn't have the brandy-rich and melismatic voice of a Jones, more of the stentorian working-stiff everyman bray of a John Conlee, Verne Gosdin, David Houston, etc. In fact, it's the same vocal style as the hated Toby Keith commands. Which, again, makes it all the more powerful as an outreach.

Sorry to go all country fanatic on you. I've lived on DU for this moment.

54. Here's some buzz about it!
TAKIN' MY COUNTRY BACK - Nashville's Honky Tonkers For Truth have released a hard-hitting song written by David Kent, author of Blake Shelton's "Austin." Give it a listen and get your free MP3 and Lyrics download without fear of the RIAA at www.takinmycountryback.com Who is that singing anyway? Click the link to hear in Real Audio format. Nashville's WSM 95.5 is currently playing the 30 second radio spot, but a representative of the radio station said they cannot play the full song since there is no record out representing the opposing viewpoint.

26. And I forgot to mention

He has a pedigree. He's the son of Joe Stampley, of "Moe and Joe" fame -- (as in Moe Bandy). Those two put out one of the all time great get-drunk-and-go-crazy records of all times, "Good Old Boys (Holding the Bag)" -- included such songs as "The lady from the Country of 1100 Lakes." (For you old-time midwestern beer-drinkers out there, that will make sense).

This is serious working-class country, not a put on. Keep kicking this thread and get people to send the song out. I swear it will help.

if you gave me a choice--country music, love it or hate it?-- without being able to qualify my answer, I would pick the latter. But DAMN, that was GOOD!

I know nothing about country music, so please feel free to ridicule me, but it sounded a bit to me like Randy Travis. Of course, a lot of songs sound like Randy Travis to me, he's the only country music singer I have ever met!

That gets an A Plus! I urge everyone to listen and pass it around.

24. Hmm, very interesting

A very knowledgeable friend of mine, in Nashville for years, heard Randy Travis too. Here's what I wrote back (warning, singer geek alert):

"I'm pretty certain it's not Randy. Too much nasalization and a bit of pharyngeal scratch that I've never heard from RT. I hear what you are talking about, though, in the vowels in the first verse. Which locates the singer as a Carolinian, most likely. Except that he starts to lose those dipthongs as the song progresses, so the accent might just be a bit overdrawn at first."

The basic vowel quality and timbre of this guy's voice is enough like Randy to have at least a few people who know guessing the same as you, who doesn't even dig country. I don't think it is. He has an unmistakeable voice, but excellent stab!

He actually co-wrote a song with Randy Travis -- "I hate to see you going (but I love to watch you walk away)." Any further doubt that this is real country is now erased!

He's signed with Dreamworks, too.

36. Good call

Tracy "Redneck Roses" Byrd is a redneck boy from Beaumont and cut his teeth in the same clubs as George Jones and Mark Chesnutt. I could see how you might think this was him. It's Tony Stampley (see some other posts in the thread).

Now tell your daughter, who obviously knows something about the music, to send it to a dozen of her best country music friends.

35. Me too
It's hard, to paraphrase a certain president, for me to deal with how suppressed the working-class populist voice has gotten in the music I love most, that I play and study and would take to that proverbial island in the sea.

This song is a rare thing, leftist populist working-class anger, served cold and patriotic, in an authentic voice with the pedigree to match. I love Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams, but for me, it's been a long time coming since songs like Haggard's "Working Man's Blues" were on the chart. Even modern singers who try to strike this pose usually fall flat for me (like Aaron Tippin). Dale Watson is a treasure, for those looking for something like what Haggard and Cash were in their prime, but he's got a very small (if very devoted) following.

So when I heard this, and how GOOD it was, I actually choked up. I think I've listened to it 20 times tonight, and sent it to over a hundred friends -- musicians, lefties, rednecks, anyone I could think of who would get it. And here's a nice note -- two of my old DJ friends I sent it to (one in New Jersey and one in Wisconsin) were so excited they are planning to play it immediately. Alas, these are both college stations, but the Wisconsin one is a hard country show (with an up-from-working-class DJ) that surely reaches some of the working folks in that swing state.

I swear, once more, on everything I ever learned in beer joints and dance halls playing in red states for a living that if this song caught on and was heard by just a couple of hundred thousand people in the right places that it would make a difference. It's that moving to a real country fan choking on Nashville trash. So keep plugging it, please, and be creative about sending it out. If you live near an independent radio station with a country show or format, send them the CD and tell them that it's a great patriotic song.
Post a link on your own websites and blogs. You may think I'm being ridiculously optimistic and naive, but I know from years in the red state trenches of working-class America that the identification with Bush and his ilk is skin deep and as brittle as yesterdays toast. Anything could crack it. This is the musical equivalent of Farenheitt 911 except it doesn't preach to the converted.

I know people whose minds could be changed by a good country song. This is that song.

almost nothing about modern country music, except that I hate it. But I do like Johnny Cash, and I love the idea of working class, authentic music in any form. I live near a radio station based in Freedom, California which is near Watsonville. They play all kinds of authentic country and off beat stuff. They're called K-PIG, or the PIG. You should send it to them. I think they'd like it. They have have a huge national and international audience because of streaming.

46. I cried when I heard this
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 07:37 AM by Anaxamander
I grew up listening to Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline, and I feel country music, when done right, can be incredibly moving. Of course, being a liberal Democrat in South Georgia, it's easier to find people who disagree with me than agree. But hearing this song gives me hope. It makes me realize there are other country boys like me out there who drive pickup trucks, love football, and are liberal to the bone. To hear such an authentic expression of TRUE patriotism in this song brings a tear to my eye.

Edited to add: I love the double-meaning of the title. Yes, we're taking our country, the United States of America, back, but we're also taking our country MUSIC back!

Post what you are using as an OS and what you use to play music and I'll post easy instructions if I can. You should download the .wav version for max quality, so you don't have to decompress the mp3.

76. great song
the email I read said that they could not get any famous country act to do the vocals (guess they were afraid of the fallout) so they got Stampley, who is a session singer and musician. He probably has some CD's but is not really a big-name singer. Unfortunately I doubt this will get airplay on mainstream radio stations because it will be percieved as too "political" as another poster already experienced. It is a real shame but we should not quit sending it around, maybe if there is enough buzz they will play it.

press releases :

Honky Tonkers for Truth - Associated Press - 6000 radio stations!

ASSOCIATED PRESS - Morning Prep - 10/13/04
HONKY TONKERS FOR TRUTH: DON'T YOU WISH YOU'D THOUGHT OF THAT NAME?
NASHVILLE (AP) - - When some Nashville music industry professionals decide it's time for a country song to take issue with Presidential policy, the go and record one. That's how the self-named "Honky Tonkers for Truth" came about. Songwriter, David Kent, who wrote Blake Shelton's hit, "Austin," wrote "Takin' My Country Back," and took it to Tim Dubois and Mike Dungan, the presidents of Universal South Records and Capitol Records - - and producers Don Cook and Garth Fundis. What they didn't have was a big-name artist willing to put his-or-her career on the line by singing a song with a critical message - - until Tony Stampley stood up. He performs the song "Takin' My Country Back." The Honky Tonkers for Truth say they support our troops overseas, and believe in family, faith and freedom and deeply love this country. But they say the songs by Toby Keith, Charlie Daniels, Darryl Worley and other give people the false impression that everyone in country music supports the current administration.

COUNTRY MUSIC'S OTHER VOICE:
A group of Nashville music industry professionals, calling themselves the Honky Tonkers for Truth, decided it was time that a country song take issue with Presidential policy, (much like Darryl Worley's, Have You Forgotten and Toby Keith's, Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue speak in favor of it). They had no problem finding a hit-songwriter, a professional studio, and top-drawer session players and engineers, all who were willing to donate their talents and services and, to stand up and be counted as country music's "other voice."

What they had in a matter of days was, Takin' My Country Back, penned by David Kent (Austin by Blake Shelton and other country hits), a stone-cold country song clearly criticizing the President's record. With just a "demo vocal" of the song, they went directly to the top:
Tim Dubois (President, Universal South Records); Mike Dungan (President, Capitol Records); Don Cook (Producer, Brooks & Dunn); Garth Fundis (Producer, Trisha Yearwood) for starters. Without exception, these Music Row executives loved the song. What the Honky Tonkers for Truth had on their hands was a hit...almost.

What they didn't have was a "brand name" singer willing to put his/her career on the line by singing a song with a critical message. The Honky Tonkers for Truth are comprised of successful songwriters, publishers, producers, musicians, and attorneys. Even with their combined contacts, the best they could get from the "star" country artists they queried (all self-proclaimed Democrats) was a "maybe" and then, when their managers caught wind of it, "Sorry...and good luck.

Enter, Tony Stampley, one of Nashville's most respected session singers and son of country legend, Joe Stampley. Tony's stellar performance of Takin My Country Back and his willingness, rather, his passion and enthusiasm, to be a part of country music's "other voice"
inspired the Honky Tonkers for Truth to take the song directly to the world via radio, the internet, and any other means possible. Examples:

1) The lyrics of Takin' My Country Back were broadcast on the JumboTron at the Gaylord Entertainment Center as the song played to 8,000 concerned Nashville citizens who came to hear speaker/activist/filmmaker, Michael Moore, the night of October 9, 2004.

2) Acclaimed Nashville journalist/reviewer, Robert K. Oermann, wrote in Music Row Magazine (10/8/04), "The war, the economy, tax cuts for the rich, sending jobs overseas...it's all here in one cleverly written package. Yes, it's topical. But it's also a real good country record."

3) Journalist, Neil Haislop, who provides the Nashville Update for GAC (Great American Country) television network wrote, "The Honky Tonkers for Truth, a grassroots Nashville-based organization, who support the troops overseas and love this country, have released a country track that expresses their sentiments for a change in Washington."

4) At this writing, the website: www.TakinMyCountryBack.com has been up for ten days. It's had 90,000 hits to date.

5) 30 and 60 second radio spots featuring the song Takin' My Country Back are playing now on selected country radio stations and can be downloaded for free at our website.

6) The ASSOCIATED PRESS featured Takin' My Country Back in the 10/13/04 edition of The AP Morning Prep. They service SIX THOUSAND radio stations.

The Honky Tonkers for Truth support our troops overseas, believe in family, faith and freedom, and deeply love this country. What we disagree with is, the image and the misconception
that all people in the country music industry support the current administration. For those who differ with our opinion, we respect your right to speak freely, defend your position, and express yourself because, we believe in the rights provided to ALL of us by The First Amendment. So far, there has been nothing on country radio to reflect our sentiment and, there are millions of country music lovers who feel the same way we do. All we're asking for is EQUAL TIME on the airwaves. To hear this brave song free of charge, go to: www.TakinMyCountryBack.com

The Honky Tonkers for Truth welcome inquiries and interviews by any and all members of the media. Contact: info@TakinMyCountryBack.com

Robert K. Oermann

All of which brings me to “Takin’ My Country Back” by Honky Tonkers for Truth. Yes, it’s topical. But it’s also a real good country record.

HONKY TONKERS FOR TRUTH/Takin’ My Country Back

—It’s honky tonk to the core, all right. But this ain’t your run-of-the-mill redneck lyric. “You blew the budget and you botched Iraq/Now I’m taking my country back,” is the tag line of the chorus. The war, the economy, tax cuts for the rich, sending jobs overseas...it’s all here in one cleverly written package. I’m told that Honky Tonkers for Truth wish to perform at the Michael Moore event in Nashville this weekend. Stay tuned.

G.A.C. news for Fri-Sun, Oct. 8-10, 200

HONKY TONKERS FOR TRUTH MAKE SONG AVAILABLE
Honky Tonkers for Truth, a grassroots organization of Nashville-based singers, songwriters, players, engineers, publishers, lawyers and producers who support the troops overseas, believe in family, faith and freedom, and who deeply love this country have released "Takin' My Country Back," a country music track that expresses their sentiments for a change in Washington.

Written by David Kent ("Austin"/Blake Shelton), "Takin' My Country Back" will, for a limited time, be offered free of charge to the public as well as all media outlets and radio through their website: www.takinmycountryback.com. After the November 2 election, a licensing fee will be reinstated.

99. As a big-city country lover myself
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 04:32 PM by realcountrymusic
I think you should give the music -- especially the best of the stuff - a second chance, and beyond this song. Most country, since the 1950s at least, has dealt quite extensively with urban experience. Modern hard country is in fact the music of the rural-to-urban migration of the American working class. The classic country themes are global (and this is evidenced by the global popularity of the genre). Love and loss, alienation and a sense of place, the anieties of aging, the pleasures of good company -- nothing rural or urban in particular there. My argument is that the "rural" element in modern country is mostly a metaphor for loss of tradition, the signla modern, urban experience around the world.

Here's a stat to consider. Country is among the biggest musics going in Aboriginal Australia, the Anglophone Caribbean (especially Grenada, St. Lucia, Guyana, and Jamaica), Black Southern Africa, and Native America. A case can be made, in fact, that country is the second or third most widely listened-to music in the world, after Bollywood film music and (this is debatable) hip-hop. And you should hear how much country has found its way into the Bollywood sound!

112. Amazing, but true

In Brooklyn, NYC there are quite a few Caribbean nightclubs that mix hard country into the flow with Soca, Reggae, Zouk, Calypso, etc. And a number of the dancers wear western clothes. And there are some very good country singers from St. Lucia and Grenada and Barbados and Guyana in the community (Bed-Stuy).

It often blows people's minds to hear this. The only thing more interesting is, perhaps, that country is almost universally beloved in black communities in southern Africa, and has been since the 1940s. Jim Reeves is a god there, and Don Williams and Dolly Parton are modern superstars who sell out soccer stadiums when they tour in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Kinda changes the meaning, doesn't it?

113. I knew a guy
whose claim to fame was that he and a few of my other Jamrock friends were extras in a James Bond movie that they filmed there. He had one of the few Cadillacs on the island, decked out with (I kid you not) HORNS, as in steer horns, and an Eight Track Player with the largest country music collection I had ever seen. He also wore a cowboy hat and a big Texas-ish belt buckle (a bit off putting with the white shoes and belt).

But the funniest thing was, the bway had nevah lef de hiland! He was jamrock born and raised, so that is probably proof positive, in and of itself, that the influence of the music has been out there for some time!

98. Darn right

Some of us in the trade have been saying so for a long time. We were on the verge of making the case before 9/11 set us back to the dark ages.

96. Pass Along... This Song... This is HOT
Big Thanks to REALCOUNTRYMUSIC for bringing this to our attention:

As a good ol' country boy myself I can tell you that if this song gets circulated it will have big influence on a culture of folks we would like to swing our way.

Most radio stations will not play it because of it's strong political statement. This song is more powerful than Fahrenheit-911 to a good-ol-boy.

Do everything you can to circulate this song.

http://www.takinmycountryback.com/main.htm . free download or you can play from there.

97. Thank you for the props

And I just had another indy radio DJ friend agree to play it this week (in New Jersey).

I agree, btw, that this may out-kick F911. That movie, which I loved, preached to the converted. This song tells it like it is, but is aimed squarely at the wholly unconverted, and speaks their language.

Plus it just flat out rocks.

117. Memories of my childhood...
Mostly good-- me and mom singing Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn songs.

I don't like today's country music; but I still listen to bluegrass.

But this song ROCKS!

It's making the rounds!!!! Anyone who has not listened to it yet, I, as a non-country music expert or diehard, urge you to listen to it. It gets you revved up in the best possible way--a real anthem for the next two weeks!!!!

122. Not a big country fan...
But a big folk fan.
Let's not forget, country music is just a twang, a sigh, and a blow on the mouth harp away from folk music. People like Woody and Arlo and Leadbelly, Joan and Judy, Dylan and countless others who would raise hell if you ever called them 'conservative'.
An interesting observation. The phrase "Taking back my country" could be read on two levels. The literal: My country--the united states. And the figurative: My county--my taste in music, which has been so hijacked and used for political purposes in recent years.
