Today's crazy Cheney behavior explained
Well, I don't know really, but I think this (Lynn Cheney calling John Kerry "Not a good man" and all of the other stuff that we sane people find totally inexplicable) is an attempt to excite the fundamentalists into working harder for Bush's election. The fundies hate it when they are reminded that their vice president's daughter is homosexual. It might even drive them into rage. Rage which can be used for getting out the vote.

Any thoughts?

1. Don't they just hate being on the defensive?
My guess is that they've been trying to get the fundie vote going for the past four years. I have a hard time believing that they can make much more ground in a few fast weeks. All I'm saying is that they "outted all the vote they can".

2. He was trying to deflect
from the promotion of Nightline. They didn't want an electorate as cued in as we are right now to see what happened on Nightline. Just my theory.

The media bit into it hook, line, and sinker.

3. I've commented in a couple other threads...

... that the motivation for today's faux-outrage was simply to divert media attention away from Kerry's debate Hat Trick, Bush's miserable performance, and perhaps most especially away from Bush's "I never said I wasn't concerned about Osama" lie.

From the news shows I watched tonight... they were wholly successful with NBC, ABC and CNN (Dobbs) -- but Keith Olbermann kept his coverage focused on the *whole* debate and gave the "Mary Cheney" issue balanced *and fair* coverage. (I don't have any info on CBS' coverage from tonight.)

See here for more of Olbermann's comments on the debate...

5. CBS's coverage
CBS Evening News covered it as part of their campaign coverage. You'd think that it was the most important part of the debate. So, if diversion was the goal, they succeeded.

8. NBC Nightly News did also
and I read on this forum that ABC's news program did the same thing. So it looks like all three of the majors got the fax from the RNC and ran with it.

13. Yep, cmorea's post clinches it. All 4 whored for the RNC tonight...
... plus throw in Lou Dobbs. Just pitiful.

Well, all we can do is email & call them, and maybe point them to Thursday's 'Countdown' for an example of honest coverage.

4. Democrats should have left that grenade lay on the ground.
Lynne's "outrage" has been shown twice an hour all day long on cable news, whereas Kerry's remark "in context" has been ignored. Why are we talking about Mary Cheney when more Americans were killed today in Iraq?

I don't understand what value either of the Johns expected by bringing up Cheneys' daughter. We all know, thanks to mom and pop, that Mary is the black sheep who was kept away from both 2000 and 2004 Republican National Conventions while "normal" Liz and her rug rat were spotlighted. They only trotted out Mary last month when the Log Cabin Republicans started to bolt from the party and a couple of million gay Republican votes was good enough to pimp daughter Mary to them.

Of course, Mary got her first pimping experience working for the ultra-right-wing Coors family, saving their huge losses from the nation-wide gay Coors Beer boycott.

6. The value of keeping "something about Mary" on all the
tv's is because we should be seeing coverage on Bush's biggest lie about not caring about Osama - deflection works every time.

9. it's still all a display of Republican hypocrisy

in the literal sense of 'hypocrisy': 'the act or practice of simulating or feigning feelings or beliefs, especially the false appearance of piety and virtue; dissimulation; insincerity'

The idea that everyone ought to participate in their ingenuousness and affirm the legitimacy of dealing with homosexuality as if it were a reason for shame or a psychiatric disease- now that, that is begging or coercing all of us to become hypocrites like Lynne herself.

10. It was very much planned by the campaign to turn the wedge issue back on
the republicans. You can bet that they did focus groups with right wing fundi's that showed w's support dropped after they found out about mary.
rove has placed all of his chips on their base and w can only win if they show up in unprecedented numbers. The gay marriage amendment was on the ballot here in the august primary and passed 70% to 30%.
Many of these voters are gay issue voters only and can easily be turned off when they find out that the cheney's have a gay daughter.
Look for the r's to drop this as soon as possible as it has only downside for them.

... while they rant about Kerry using Mary for something they can't figure out, because he didn't.
