That's it guys... Swift Boat Slander Guys are no longer an issue |

They're now completely irrelevant except to an extreme chickenhawk fringe that is solid Bush base anyway.
O'Neil completely discredited himself on Nightline. He came off looking desperate, jealous, unstable and dare I say stalkerish. As his ridiculous claims were being debunked, all he could do was wave around books and rudely interrupt Koppell. He looked like the bitter little man he is.
They'll hardly register a blip on the radar after this.

The only thing I find odd is that Koppel didn't read the version in Kerry's book, and instead took the word of the peasants. Or is O'Neil lying again?

Kerry has ALWAYS SAID there wa ONLY ONE MAN who had a LAUNCHER.
ALWAYS said that.
ALL the navy after-action and citation reports say ONLY ONE MAN had a LAUNCHER.
O'Neill takes that as meaning there wa ONLY ONE MAN THERE. PERIOD.
But there were OTHER CONG THERE with OTHER WEAPONS.
As Kerry has ALWAYS SAID.
As the Navy reports said.
As the SBers said (and say).
As the Vietnamese say.

I wasn't aware of what Kerry actually said, and if O'Neill took him out of context.

Edited on Thu Oct-14-04 11:48 PM by Tamyrlin79
They have a **more unimpeachable** credibility than John Kerry. Kerry can at least be assigned a MOTIVE for lying in the situation (and this is the very opening/vulnerability that the SBVT ads rely on to create doubts in the public's mind). Kerry could have gained much from lying. The peasants could not. Attributing a motive to them is more difficult. Therefore, if they back up what Kerry has said, Kerry's account (and Kerry in general in the election) becomes more credible. And the SBVT lose their opening to attack Kerry credibly... at least on this matter. Koppel was right to side with the peasants' accounts.

This Nightline report won't stop them. It's not like reality, truth, integrity had anything to do with their story thus far.
The only thing that will stop them is if other news organizations show a measure of the journalistic backbone that ABC and Koppel managed to stiffen tonight.
Of course, the media's 100% duplicity in echoing the right-wing "Mary Cheney" nonsense today -- whilst wholly ignoring Bush's "never said I'm not concerned about Osama" lie -- doesn't give me much hope.

out of having been proven wrong, then Koppel will have to respond to the complaints by publicizing this story. I hope this will happen. O'Neill needs to be put in his place.

7. You should have seen him 30 years ago |
|
The entire country ridiculed & mocked him, ESPECIALLY the Republicans, for his pack of bullshit lies. But O'Neill sure loved playing the bigshot sitting in the Oval Office with Nixon.
It sure shows how stoopid the latest generation of rightwingnuts are; notice how most of the older rightwingnut pundits & Republicans called the SBLs a pack of bullshit liars from the start.
But the freeping stoopid rightwingnuts think O'Neill's credible; what they don't even know is that O'Neill spewed the EXACT SAME LIES 30 years ago and was SO mocked & ridiculed, he fled into hiding.
Too bad the rightwingnuttery don't bother listening to the Nixon tapes, where Nixon, Colson and O'Neill talk about how CREDIBLE KERRY IS and how BEING SO CREDIBLE meant Kerry would END THE WAR when Nixon was wanting to ESCALATE the war; how O'Neill must SMEAR KERRY to discredit him but they'd FOUND NOTHING with which to smear him with.
Rightwingnuts never used to be so stupid. Is it Faux Moos?

15. Fauxviews can certainly get a lot of credit for it |
|
but I also think it's that there is a generation (like me) that lived through the war but not the details of politics.
I was 15 thirty years ago and that was toward the end of the conflict. For years, every night on the news, Vietnam War...more and more and more killed...no end in sight...will my brother have to go (5 years older than me)...will he come back...friends of my brother's drafted... I didn't read the newspapers and pay attention to the political details. I was more focused on err...social development.
I suspect there are a lot out there like me, and we've had to do a history lesson and dig into the facts. JMHO

years later for any harm they may have caused Kerry. O'Neill has a fixation on his 70's role as Nixon's hatchet man. And how many times has he changed his group's name -- 5, 6? He seems so pathetic.

Remember that a very small percentage of the electorate watch Nightline any given night. Will they give this the same amount of coverage the Swift boat vets for Bush? Knowing the corporate controlled media, doubt it.

Only time will tell if other media outlets step up to the plate in the way that Nightline did tonight -- marginally restoring some of their credibility.

25. Smearing Kerry per Nixon's orders is all O'Neill ever had |
|
O'Neill didn't even know who Kerry was until Nixon had Colson find someone to smear Kerry.
Colson met O'Neill and thought he was "very presentable". Unfortunately for them, as the Nixon tapes show, Nixon & Colson knew Kerry was "very credible" and that there was nothing to discredit Kerry with.
So they met with o'Neill and had him try to smear Kerry with SUBJECTIVE things; that Kerry was wrong to protest the war, etc. They had NOTHING FACTUAL against Kerry because there was NOTHING FACTUAL against Kerry.
And that was DURING THE TIME; there was NOTHING that the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES could find in the OFFICIAL RECORDS to use against Kerry.
Again...The US PRESIDENT, NIXON, COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING in the official records to discredit Kerry with.
Funny how the rightwingnuts think 30 years later they can find anything, when NIXON COULDN'T then.
Anyways, this was the ONLY THING O'Neill ever got out of life; he sat in the Oval Office next to Nixon. He was a bigshot, a somebody, for the first time ever in his life.
And he was ridiculed and mocked and run out of town and into hiding by the entire population of America for his ridiculous attempts at discrediting Kerry.
His lies DID NOT pass the laugh test 30 years ago, and HIS SAME LIES do not pass the laugh test now, 30 years later.
Except the newer generation of rightwingery are far easier to dupe, far dumber, than the rightwing was back then.
