2. MoDo's a little schizophrenic.........
I suppose that's her job though. I don't read into this article what you do I guess. She's trying to point out the good and bad traits of both candidates. Certainly Bush has more bad traits than Kerry, but we can't have everything our way all the time. If we did, we'd be called "Republicans".
I think she's echoing what a lot of people feel about the choices in November. Let's face it, Kerry does not resonate with most people the way he does with us. Is Kerry a better choice come November? Without question. But from talking to a LOT of mainstream people in the last few months, Kerry doesn't overly impress them. To the them it's a choice of the lesser of two evils.
We can't get overly excited about every article that doesn't paint Kerry as the second coming of Christ. We here at DU are Kerry's foot soldiers. The majority of people in this country are the ones staying home letting the soldiers on both sides slug it out. Trying to reach these people and win them over is OUR job, not Maureen Dowd's.
I'm no great fan of MoDo, but in the long run I think she thumps Bush harder than Kerry.

31. If what you say about Kerry is true,
that he doesn't resonate as strongly with mainstream voters, then there is only one reason for that: They are relying on the corporate news to shape their view.

There's nothing any of us can do about that.

When Kerry is president, he'll be able to get those people behind him easily.

3. pretty harsh, it seemed like a pretty objective article to me.
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 07:32 AM by lectrobyte
to quote a paragraph:

Mr. Kerry should have at least tried to pierce Mr. Bush's nimbus of mendacity on Iraq and Saddam and Al Qaeda and the economy, and reached for a dramatic moment - à la Captain "Ah, but the strawberries" Queeg, or Jack "You can't handle the truth" Nicholson - by riposting, "Only a delusional frat boy from Crawford. ..."

end quote.

I'd like to have seen a bit more punch and fireworks myself. As she says, Bush is divorced from reality, and we are still struggling to land an open punch. The only part I might question is her take on mentioning Cheney's daughter, but I can see where folks are coming from if they thought that was a bad thing to do. Since Ms. Dowd seems to rip on Bush much harder than Kerry, what whoring are you getting at?

16. Wow. you made some insulting puns based on people's names.
That takes a lot of insight and wit. I truly admire your ability to think up such original and thought provoking banter...

But let's try this. Not just the "Screw York Times." No, that's not caustic enough. They're the "Screw Whork Times." And since they're a bunch of little farts, we can call them the "Pressti-toots" from the Screw Whork Times. No, from the Screw Whork Crimes because it's a crime when people disagree with us. Especially when they're Pressti-toots--no, whoresti-toots--from Screw Whork City. I mean Screw Whork Shitty.

Yes, they have been truly insulted now. I have totally contributed to the political dialog in this country. I mean the political LIE-a-LOG in this cuntry. Woof woof.

20. My mom used to refer to Sadaam Hussein as
Sadaam Insane and Kohmeni as Kackameni.

I always found that sophmoric and uninspired. Of course, you don't tell your own mother that, of course, though I would occasionally try to explain that such name calling didn't make a person look terrible intelligent. She never really got what I meant.

Maybe that's why such behavior makes me cringe now. It's not cute on the Right. It's not cute on the Left. It's juvenile, either way.

We're supposed to be the intelligent, educated ones here, people.

8. I think all these pundits forget that there simply isn't time in those
debate formats to put in all these punches and still get ones own message out. If a candidate did that, then the whores would complain that they never "gave their vision" of how to solve problems, etc. In other words they can always find a way to criticize because it's impossible to do it all in those limited time frames. The punches come in the campaign speeches and, of course, we know that no self respecting journalist would ever cover what the candidates are saying on the campaign trail. That would be un-American and might make the people actually think. I'm sick of these overpaid excuses for journalists. And editorial writers in particular should have to attend and report on every speech before they open their mouths.

9. I don't normally read her, but this article seemed balanced to me...
sure, I'd have rather it had all been negative against bush, positive for Kerry, but that's unrealistic. IMHO, Kerry came off a lot better than Bush in this piece, even though she did throw barbs at both.

I think her overall point is a valid one: the debates with someone scintillating or bombastic would have made a more interesting debate TO WATCH. And I agree with her that Kerry could have gone for the jugular more.

To call bush "mini me" is very derogatory and really describes him very well.

11. How to write this without appearing to be sexist....
the key to Dowd is to understand that she loves and lusts after men and even loves it more she can make men lust after her. By watching her, you can tell how she gets a lot of her information - she makes men think that she wants them.

You can see it in her tv appearances - for example, a few weeks ago she was on Bill Maher's show. She would sit there and bite her lower lip, flip her hair and bat her eyes at the males.

Currently she is in the new Rolling Stone posed on some stairs in an erotic manner.

She has learned the way to inner male.

Maureen Dowd is one of the most anti-Bush well syndicated columnists in the country. She's incredibly progressive and wrote the anti-Bush book "Bush World." She's by no means a "Bush whore" as some you so eloquently put it. Actually, I think she's really hot.

30. Dowd makes a nice pitch for a Nader vote.
She is right that its a shame Kerry didn't go straight after Bush more often in Round 3. Bush would say something stupid and Kerry would respond with a calm response to the question.

Kerry played it like a team with a 10 point lead entering the 4th quarter.

Smart, but not very exciting.

38. The problem is that she does what she criticizes in others.
Maureen Dowd devotes much of her piece to criticism of the appearances of the candidates and the namby-pamby comments they make about their wives and daughters. Then she complains about the lack of hard-hitting attacks or discussion from Kerry. But if you read the transcript, you'll find he discussed the minimum wage, right to choose, etc.

Dowd wants to have it both ways. She wants to be Carrie Bradshaw and and Colman McCarthy, and winds up being neither.
