Several Advertisers Pull Out of Portland, ME Sinclair Station!

Advertisers pull ad over station's airing of Kerry film

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) Several businesses have pulled advertising from WGME-TV in response to the station's plan to televise a critical documentary about John Kerry's anti-Vietnam War activities.

Hannaford supermarkets, the Lee Auto Malls, and the law offices of Joe Bornstein withdrew their advertising indefinitely, according to the Portland Press Herald.

WGME Channel 13 plans to air ''Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal'' on Oct. 23. Mark Hyman, Sinclair's vice president of corporate communications, did not return phone calls to the paper Thursday.

6. Those rich bastards who own Sinclair probably don't give a hoot
about advertisers. They are too hard core right wingers for that.

7. My mother, who lives in Maine, sent me an e-mail saying Hannaford reversed
themselves. Is that true?

10. This is what she forwarded to me
We would like to keep you updated on our status related to the Sinclair Broadcasting concern.

Effective immediately, we have reversed our decision to pull our advertising from WGME. We recognize that WGME has been put in an untenable position. It was never our intent to politicize this issue even more, or to punish WGME. We are in the supermarket business, not the political business. We have always made our media buying decisions based on our customer demographic, and will continue to do so.

We truly apologize for any frustration or confusion this may have caused you. We appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter.

Sincerely,

Susan L. Wharton
Customer Relations Specialist

13. Did she get this info before or after this story was published?
Maybe you should contact this newspaper that published the article about the information your mom received.

15. I just got this from her.
I don't know the chronology. It has to have been received after the PPH story was published.

11. Law offices of Joe Bornstein...hehe
I remember those commercials. "Joe Bornstein?!... Let's settle this one."

Hannaford is a pretty good company. I worked at a few of their supermarkets when I was in high school and college.

I bet hardly anyone in the Portland area will what this anyhow. That is the most liberal area in Maine. No one in central or northern Maine will be able to receive that channel on their TV set.

17. I would say it depends on when they made the decision
not to advertise.

An article like this was in the Portland Press Herald. They are probably the original publishers of the information.

The reporter's name, phone number, and email address are at the bottom of this article. Contact him if you think something in the story might not be right.

14. I just got a reply from Hannaford
they changed their mind and will not withdraw their ads. Good-bye
I refuse to spend another nickle there, even though I have to travel to the next town.

Duncan Donuts replied and said they are "looking into it"

I wrote to almost every single advertisor on the WGME webite and posted the addy in Skinner's thread that was at the top of the page.
