my letter to the editor about Bush. |
|
I am sending this to the Denver Post.
Dear Editor,
In the year 1998, I graduated high school and went to college. Jobs were plentiful, there was a surplus and the President's name was Bill Clinton. I graduated college in 2003, with a 4-year degree. In 2003, there were virtually no jobs, a record deficit and the President's name was George W. Bush. In the last debate with John Kerry, when being asked a question about problems of outsourcing and minimum wage being too low, Bush's answer is that everyone should go to a community college. For me, holding a 4-year degree and no job prospects, this was insulting. To people who have lost their jobs in IT, who also hold at least 4-year degrees, it is insulting. For those who have worked in factories for 20 years and have been laid off, that is insulting. Bush's comment shows, that like with everything else, he has no plan for the economy, except more of the same. His answer was ignorant and small minded. That is why, I will vote for John Kerry. Mr. Kerry actually has a plan and believes that this country can do better. He also did not insult me and many others the way Mr. Bush did. I used to vote both sides, but I will not do it anymore. Thanks to Mr. Bush.

Enrollment in Computer degrees is down at least 30% and higher in some states. The college students are seeing the writing on the wall and choosing other fields.
I am in IT and have been for 15 years. This is the worst economy for IT I have seen and it is progressively getting worse. Outsourcing is expected to increase 30% - 40% per year over the next 10 years.
It may be time for me to switch fields. Maybe I could try something simpler like mowing lawns. I too find it insulting that I am told that I need more education. I have a B.S. in Management Information Systems and I busted my ass getting that degree while I was working full-time and it took me 8 years.

8. You are not getting the point. |

This is not just about IT and for the record, I did not get my degree in IT. But when you invest in a college education, even if you don't necessarily get work in your field, you should be able to find something that is meaningful. When you have to work at McDonalds or Wal Mart, that is extremely insulting. Much the same way, it is insulting to tell someone to go to community college to get an associate's degree when they have a Bachelor's and maybe more. Also, many have made their living doing something that they have become good at. Then, they lose that and Bush is telling them, when they are 45 or 50, that they should go to community college? It should be a choice. IT is an example I was using. A very good example. But, I was making a general statement about how there are legitimate problems with the job market and Dimson does not care or understand.

it's not just about IT. Since that's what I've done since I was seven years old, though, it's the only thing I know. What should I do, then? I have management experience and am extemely quick on the uptake, but writing code is what I do, what I have always done, and what I always want to do.
Do I have to choose to do something else, just because the president wants to make his rich friends richer? I don't mean to sound snippy, it's not you I'm mad at, it's the blow-monkey in the white house.
