SHEBOYGAN, Wisc., Oct. 15 /U.S. Newswire/ - Gold-medal Olympians, Julie Foudy and Abby Wambach, announced their endorsement of John Kerry and John Edwards for President and Vice President of the United States. The soccer stars took a break from their post-Olympic exhibition series to show their support for the Kerry-Edwards ticket by campaigning with Kerry in Wisconsin. Foudy and Wambach have already showed their support for the Kerry-Edwards ticket by helping to register voters in Oregon and attending an event with Vanessa Kerry in Ohio this past weekend.
"I am honored to have these talented athletes as part of my team," said Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry. "These women have been an emblem of perseverance, determination and strength and they will bring these qualities to the campaign as we work together to build an America stronger at home and more respected in the world."
Foudy and Wambach indicated that they chose John Kerry over George Bush because of Kerry's strong record and plan to increase opportunities for women.
"John Kerry and John Edwards understand the importance of expanding opportunities for girls and women, and that is one reason I am proud to endorse them today," said Julie Foudy. "John Kerry and John Edwards support the Equal Pay Initiative, raising the minimum wage, giving women-owned businesses the resources to grow and thrive, and Title IX -- all of which are critical to ensuring that we achieve our potential in every aspect of our lives."
The unemployment rate for women is 27 percent higher than it was when Bush took office. In addition, Bush eliminated the Equal Pay Initiative while the gap in pay between men and women has increased. George Bush has also failed to provide women with accessible, affordable health care and 2.2 million women have lost health care coverage on Bush's watch.
As president, John Kerry will continue his career-long fight for equal opportunity for women in the workplace. The Kerry- Edwards plan will create millions of high quality jobs for women, make equal pay for equal work a reality, not just a slogan and increase access to capital for women-owned small business. John Kerry and John Edwards will ensure that American women and families have access to the affordable health care they need.
