Statement from Kerry National Security Advisor in Response to Bush Freezing Zarqawi Assets

Washington, DC - Statement from John Kerry’s National Security Advisor Rand Beers in response to today’s announcement from the Bush administration to freeze any assets of the militant group led by Jordanian Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, which has claimed responsibility for a series of bombings, kidnappings and killings in Iraq.

“Given that Abu Musab al Zarqawi is responsible for numerous horrific acts of terrorism in Iraq, including many attacks on U.S. forces, it is inexplicable that George W. Bush waited until today to shut down his finances. It now appears that while the Bush Administration was quick to tout Zarqawi as a justification for going to war, they showed no urgency when it came to actually taking this basic action. This is yet another example of President Bush’s failure to effectively prosecute the war in Iraq or the war on terror.”
