I got a Salazar Yard sign and put it out in front of my house. I put a Kerry/Edwards sign up in my window.

2. Isn't always easy when you suspect you live in Freepville. |
|
We finally put a K-E yard sign in the front flowerbed last Sunday (it's been so dry here, it was the only place we could get the wires in the ground).
My neighborhood is weird, though. On this block, there's only one B*/C sign, in our neighbors' front yard. On the remainder of this block, there are five Dem local candidate signs (our county didn't buy Kerry-Edwards signs, they decided to put the money into radio and local TV ads, so the rest of the Dems have local candidate signs) and two Kerry-Edwards signs, but the block down there are five housese in a cluster with Bush* signs, and another with a local GOP candidate sign.
I just keep telling myself I know how hard it was to get a Kerry sign. Kukesa, a fellow DUer who's in the same county, had an extra and gave it to me last week. We wire-tied it to the frame and jammed the wires down into the dirt as far as we could get, and put it within the halo of our motion-sensitive front light. If they want to vandalize, they'll have to be obvious about it -- and we just got the ones from the Kerrygear website today, so if they think they'll make us disappear, f*ck 'em. We've got two more, and we'll put them out until the fat lady sings.

We're on a through street, and lots of people drive down it. I don't know if I'd have been as proactive about getting a sign if the mouth-breathers next door hadn't put a Bush* sign out front, since there are lots of Dem signs on both sides of the street on this block, but I figured Kerry deserved a presence, if they were going to do that!

4. Been There...Work For Change |

My neighborhood was the same way...Raygun cleared over 65% in my area. Now we're looking at having a "full boat"...a Democratic Governor, two Senator and a Congressman.
I don't have signs on my lawn, since I'm on a cul-de-sac and we need those signs on homes on heavily traveled streets. There are K/E, Osama and Melissa Bean signs around and it's feeling very good these days.
There's a repugnican precinct capatin who lives down the street. On the 4th of July, the guy started taunting me and my wife when Melissa Bean came up to us and we all hugged. He had B/C yard signs up in August, but now on Wednesday, we drove past his house and the signs are gone. We thought maybe he was cutting his lawn, but those signs are still gone today. Makes ya wonder...

We have one house, as I've noted, facing directly on my street with a Bush* sign, and there are five of us with Dem signs now. I know probably the only reason there aren't more K-E signs is the difficulty of obtaining them in this neighborhood. Mr. Nownow and I may go downtown to the Dem HQ tomorrow and see if we can get other local Dem candidate signs -- we've 'outed' ourselves in Freepville now, we might as well go all the way! We don't socialize with any of our neighbors anyhow, so if they don't like it, as a friend of mine in (heavily Dem) Chicago says -- f*ck 'em!

Things change in a hurry...and it took a long hard road to get to this point, I'm very, very careful how I deal with my GOOP neighbors and acquaintances these days.
Right now I'm enjoying sharing common cause with others in my area...many of us were our own "islands"...not knowing there were other Democrats so close, the term "had I known" gets used a lot. The pleasure I've had, win or lose, in working these last 6 months have been gratifying just in meeting so many good and real people.
The hard work begins in trying to heal the deep wounds in this country...and it'll have to be done.
Thanks for all your hard work!
Cheers!

16. Oh, it took one lengthy conversation with the mouth-breather neighbor ... |
|
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 01:02 AM by nownow
who trapped us while we were working out in the yard to express her ideas -- not directly political, more social culture things that kind of gave me the idea she was conservative ... she thought because she found some guy who was nice to her to help her raise her illegitimate son from another relationship that she was superior to women who'd used government aid, for instance. Not much wiggle room there.
We're both computer geeks who don't really socialize in the neighborhood, and I suspect it's not surprise to our neighbors we're liberal -- we have no children and five pets, we drive small cars and volunteer at an animal shelter. We don't go to church and don't pretend to be religious. Doubt anybody thought we were Republicans.
I did have a nice -- if brief -- conversation with the guy down on the corner who'd put out the Dem congressional candidate's sign, and later the Kerry sign, about a week ago. He's an apparently single guy in his forties who, I'm guessing from watching the traffic at his place, is either a furniture refinisher or an interior decorator. I do a little hobby furniture refinishing myself, and was occasionally tempted to stop and ask him where he'd gotten something he was curing in his open garage, or what he'd used on it, but I didn't have the nerve. Maybe next time he's there and something is out, I'll ask him.
We've already discussed 'escape plans' if Bush* wins -- we'll probably try to pull up stakes, if we can, and move to a 'blue state' like Illinois. We're not 'tax whiners,' but it would be nice to know your representatives shared at least some of your values and were working for you when they went to Washington. Here in Ohio, we have no such guarantees -- all our reps are GOP, at this point.

17. Stay Put...We'll Send More Democrats To Ohio |

In the 80's I ran a radio station in a very repugnican town. Everyone was a Repugnican, except moi, and any and the owner was one of the big movers and shakers...it was a surreal time. Plus this was in the heydey of Raygun. Thanks to the fairness doctrine, I was able to run a truly fair and balanced operation...we were an early talk station and made it into a "town-hall" type concept. We also made a lot of money.
I got to know a lot about politics and politicians in those days and purposely lived outside the town so I could come off as an "honest broker" as many of the shows we did would touch on hot-button local issues in a time when there weren't many places doing that. Sadly the concept got hijacked and I rue that to this day.
When you talk to many of these people...sounds like it's talking to aliens (which maybe it is), it doesn't take long to see how "kool-aided" they are.
The other day I met a banker...large firm, sent to manage a predominately rich, conservative area, veteran...and he tried to say he was "independent" in the election and was still undecided. I looked at him and said "listen, put aside the amount of business you're trying to sell me, tell me one good reason you're voting for Bush". He flushed...and then said "actually, I'm thinking of sitting this election out". I said, "that's fine, I'm probably gonna sit on making this decision until AFTER the election."

I casually gave my brother's brother in law two Kerry Bumperstickers. That was on a Friday Afternoon. On monday afternoon I checked up on him...he had not installed the sticker on his car, didn't know about the wifes. I called and left a blistering message on his machine, warned him I would be over to pick them up if he wouldn't put them on. He gave them to me and told me to "Get Out". I wrote him a letter about how enraged I was with whimpy dems that couldn't show enough balls to put a fricking sticker on their bumpers, and I couldn't care less if I lost a friend or pissed off a family member for getting in their face. I am pissed off that people don't care enough to educate themselves to the crimes being committed against us and in our names abroad. I told him this is not a game, or a church event, but life and death, and damn it I am not laying down anymore. I have two sons facing the draft and I am going to everything I can to get * out of office. So I put up multiple signs, I have Dump Bush signs plastered on my car and joined with MoveOn Pac to get at least 150 whimpy undecided swing voters in my precinct to get out and vote. Now I am sure that they are going to steal the election anyway.....what's next blocking my street with a bonefire on November 3rd......hey that might be better than going to work. get ready kids, this is fucking war.
