Catholics struggle with value judgment

A poll conducted in early August by the Pew Research Center found that 72 percent of U.S. Catholics oppose denying communion to politicians whose positions on abortion and other issues go against church teachings. Twenty-three percent favored restrictions.

Republican Catholics split 65 percent (improper to withhold communion) to 31 percent. Democratic Catholics divided 81 percent to 15 percent. The poll had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

A Star Tribune Minnesota Poll this month found Kerry leading among state Catholics, 47 percent to 42 percent, about the same advantage as Kerry held overall (48-43).
