Bush's Biggest Bad Taste Moment from Debate #3 |
|
Since everyone is suddenly soooooooo concerned about etiquette, I wanted to make sure that this piece of bad taste from Bush didn't get lost in the shuffle:
There was a point in the debate where Kerry mentioned that two leading news organizations supported some point he was making about Bush's record. On his rebuttal, Bush started out, smirkily, by saying, "Well, I'm not sure you should be citing leading news organizations to prove a point..." Then he trailed off, listened to the silence for a moment, laughed awkwardly, and said, "But anyway..."
Liza turned to me and said, basically, :wtf:
I said, "He was TRYING to make a joke about CBS and the National Guard memos. Which I think was unbelievably crass given that the MODERATOR works for CBS."
Not only was this crass, it didn't even work. The total lack of a laugh from anyone on the stage or in the audience was no doubt due to either people not realizing what he was driving at, or people realizing it and being horrified that he would gloat over this in front of Bob Schieffer. I think it was probably #1--Bush was able to get a laugh at the end with his answer to the fluff question about strong women, but throughout most of the debate any time he tried for comic timing, it was a disaster--but for me it was #2. Your operatives set the network up and then you stand up there and try to score off it in front of one of the guys who was hurt by it. Nice manners, asshole.
C ya,

2. I agree, PA. I heard it. |

I was working late at the office, so I had to listen to the debate on Air America Radio. In some ways, it's better just to listen on the radio, because you are not distracted by facial tics, smirks, speculation about a Box on The Back, drooping left mouth which might indicate a recent stroke, overwhelming Neanderthal looks that would tend to distract you.
Someone wrote right after the debate that Bush had a 'blob of spit' which distracted him from Bush's Blabbing Mouth. He didn't hear a word of the Golden Rhetoric and instead focused on his flapping jaw.
Too bad.
I heard every word. I did not fail to hear that remark. It always amazes me that Bush actually thinks he's funny. Like his dad, he fancies himself a comedian. Can be deadly serious when he needs to, but can lighten up and make the audience roar in the aisles. People look at each other, their eyes glittering and say, "wow, isn't he great! Such a Sparkling Speaker!!"
Little does George know, people are laughing all right. They're laughing at him. They are dazzled that a man who's the leader of the free world can mix up metaphors and merge sentences so amazingly, like they were in a blender. It's always so much fun to hear how they come out.
Seriously though, I did hear his little attempt at humour. It fell dead on the audience like a 2-year old Fruit Cake. It was his feeble attempt at being a smooth operator, a killer debater that just has the opponent's head swirling with fear & defence mechanisms.
Try again in your next lifetime, Fool.
