If you were the Democratic Presidential candidate |

and you thought we needed to get out of Iraq ASAP, but also thought that if you said so, you would lose the election, what would you do?

you don't lie to the American people and the world. You make your case.

stop that fucking pencil. Then I'd lie and win the election and get out. It'll get bad enough soon enough that most Americans will want to get out no matter what anyway.

And make my case.
But what good would it do to leave Iraq? Do you think terrorists would use it for a base or not? The terrorists, not the occupation resisters. Both are there.

4. I would have to do a wait and see ... |

I would run with concern for the war, but try to be realistic about what I can do before the fact.
Without inside information and the ability to create new policies, I can only try to be realistic when I run. ASAP is relative. I would support the troops and be clear on a intent for a clean pullout. I would also promise to do my best to fix the inherited problem in an intelligent, safe, and strategic way.
I would have to look into the current policy and attempt to clear up and resolve what really motivates it. PNAC represents more than just Global conquest, so it is clear that I have to review energy policies and begin a JFK-like American project to relieve our oil addiction before it REQUIRES America to be more aggressive in the Middle-East for purely practical reasons. I would not ignore growing World resource problems that are certain to incite war and conflicts.
Of course, doing all that will not make me friends in the Military Industrial Complex. I would need the people to understand the hows and whys of what we face, and then they have to support me. They would have to see that non-renewable energy is as much of a problem as terrorism ... in fact the two are inter-related.
