In 2004, Americans are too spoiled |
|
to appreciate liberalism. I had a conversation with a 67-year-old Kerry supporter during my Phone Corps calls last week. One thing we both realized is that this generation doesn't appreciate liberalism because they take its accomplishments for granted. For example, people have died for the rights of workers and civil rights. Today's youth has vacation days, 40-hour work weeks, and the right to vote (even though the Republicans in Nevada are trying to take that away). They weren't alive when people of different races had to drink at separate fountains.
Ending prohibition was probably a liberal idea at the time..now hardcore conservatives get drunk, but want to throw medical marijuana patients in jail.
Interracial married couples talk about the need to "protect marriage" without appreciating that their own marriage was once a liberal idea that scared conservatives.
Conservatives listen to or watch programs with sex, violence, and profanity, not appreciating that liberals stood up against censorship.
I wouldn't be too surprised to one day see a gay married couple talking about how much they hate liberalism...

1. Sorry to say, I think you're right. |
|
People may very well have to lose it all in order to appreciate it.

2. The Boomers did a lousy job....... |
|
My black friend's son thought his dad was kidding when he explained that at HIS age he couldn't drink/go to the bathroom where they were having lunch in TN.
ROE is in such trouble because THIS generation never KNEW anything else.
WHY would ANY gay person vote for Bushit?
Americans are not ANGRY over P1 because THEIR civil liberties have not been effected.....WAIT!

This is one of my pet peeves too.
On a related subject, I have a RW relative who expressed shock about an incident of local pollution because he was sure we had laws preventing such incidents. I felt like screaming, you idiot, don't you realize that those rabidly pro-business RWingers you support have worked to reduce those very laws and the enforcement that protects us from pollution.

4. Americans ARE the most |
|
self centered people on earth- (speaking as the Nation as a 'whole') not as individuals- Most folks here have absolutely NO idea what life outside the US is like- our 'waste' and 'greed' shame me more than i have words for-
What i feel diferenciates the Rep-Demo parties, though, beyond the civil freedoms that Dem's are far more willing to defend and promote- is the fact that the big argument about "Tax and spend" democrats is used as a kind of dis....- what the hell is money for other than to be used? what value do 'things' truly have, when compaired with the lives of our fellow humans, and other living things?????-
There are MANY 'rich' democrats- they just don't seem to worship thier money, or fear it's loss as much as the rich republicans do..... but i'm talking as one who has little to 'lose' financially, and understand all too well what is 'truly' valuable in life - having learned through many painful losses-
liberalism has it's roots in the latin word lberlis, lber... meaning free-
why do they hate us? because we're 'free'?
