John McCain on TCM I can't believe what he's saying |
|
Talking about older movie,Paths of Glory. Says this is the movie and how he used it to guide him in his policy as a politician. The movie is about a Government who sends men to a war that is wrong. It is a exactly what is happening today.

5. I thought he was making a statement against Bush but he turned it |
|
around to make GW look like he was right. I swear I just don't understand some people. I'm watching this stupid movie just to see. I hate war movies. But I think it's a paralel.

11. Boy, is it ever not a "stupid" movie |
|
The last sequence--the one in the bar--ought to be shown anybody who thinks that war has winners.

19. Stupid? Perhaps less stupid than this post. |

Paths of Glory is one of the greatest films ever made--it's an anti-war film, to boot. Why must people talk when they have no idea of what they speak?

2. That is one of my favorite movies. |
|
I don't think that's what it's about at all. It's mostly about the figment of justice for the individual, and corrupt rich people using others as pawns.

It's a great film. I sure hope Senator McCain actually sees it.

9. That's bizarre (Caution - Spolier in my reply) |
|
As the story unfolds, it's politics behind the decision to advance the troops and then to have the firing squad.

I disagree that the movie is about a government sending its men to a war that is wrong. France was invaded in 1914. They didn't invade the Germans. The Germans had also earlier invaded France in the 1870s a little over 40 years before 1914 in the Franco-Prussian war. Some of that Franco-Prussian war was still being fought in 1914, just as World War II as concerns France and Germany was a continuation of World War I. The French stopped the Germans just a few dozen kilometers from their capital, Paris, and pushed them back. These soldiers were fighting for the very life of their country. I respectfully think it would be incorrect to compare this film to the present situation in Iraq where it was America that invaded (if that's what you are saying - if that's not what you meant then I apologize).
The movie does touch on the folly of the tactics of some of the French Generals. The Nivelle Offensive killed hundreds of thousands of French soldiers in all-out head-on assaults that gained very little territory. Verdun and the Chemin-des-Dames were some of the bloodiest battles in history.
I do think that the movie emphasizes the fact that the soldier is a pawn of the politicians and the generals, the latter who sometimes don't really care for their men but only in the path of their own glory.

Curious. When George was talking to the press the other day, McCain looked grim.

21. McCain said at the end. I shows how military men are willing to die for |
|
their country no matter what. I think he fails to see just how many of them are thinking for themselves.
