about that immigration question from the debates... |

Wasn’t *'s admin the one to offer amnesty to illegal immigrants back in '03? If that’s so why didn’t Kerry say so? Is illegal immigration such a ‘under the rug’ issue to both parties?

1. It's a huge issue in border states. |
|
Huge enough that CA republicans are breaking with Bush over it. It's tricky, however, for Kerry to say much more than he did at the debate.

Isn’t the Hispanic/Latino population moving away form being a ‘special interest’ voting block? Just how much mileage can either party get out of keeping it one?

5. It's more complicated than can be tackled in |

the debate format and I admit to being remiss in not poring through the Kerry site for information on his solutions. In the heat of a hard fought campaign, sad to say, sometimes it's better to keep your powder dry.
I sincerely hope that the Kerry administration will start to do what hasn't been done in years, though Clinton tried to get a national discussion going about race relations in America, and that is to have 'symposiums' for lack of a better word on issues that are important to the country. People are so woefully ill informed on so many issues. Immigration is just one of them.

6. in Jim Hightower's book "if the gods had meant us to vote.." |

He pointed out that Clintons national forum on race relations ended up being a group/committee/whatever that reports to some kinda sub-cabinet level official. Wish I had my copy but leant it out to a co-worker.
Back to the issue itself, what or where is the group that is affected by this issue? I can see how the repigs use this issue to get the knuckle dragging members of their base hot and bothered. But where is the flash point with the great “middle of the road” voter?

2. Bob Scheiffer said he received more emails on this topic |

than any other.
I find it utterly hypocritical that neither party will discuss this issue, while it is so important to many voters.
People are talking about it, even if the parties refuse to. Look at Lou Dobbs discussions on this issue. People are paying attention.
CNN is running a special on Sunday night on this topic.
The country needs to have an honest discussion on this topic, & to find reasonable solutions.

And the local PBS station ran a program I caught it halfway; saying that Hispanics/latinos can no longer be pigeon-holed into just immigration. So who is it that this subject has a grip on?
