who was a guest on CNN's In the money earlier today

"I truly believe that the war in Iraq is a continuation of the first Persian Gulf war in 1990-'91 when the current president's father was in the White House. He said very clearly at the time that this was a war to protect oil. And he put it this way -- oil is vital to our national security, therefore, protecting Saudi Arabia is in the national interest. If you put it that way, that's not too different from what the current president Bush is saying that Saddam Hussein posed a threat to the Persian Gulf area, to our allies in the Gulf, like Saudi Arabia, and he had to be taken down. But ultimately it's for the same reason, to stabilize the Gulf area and try to protect the flow of oil."
I do, however, disagree with the professor that "the day will come when petroleum will be scarce, and that we're going to need to change our habits, our driving habits and a lot else."
I really think that even when the price of gasoline is $5.00 a gallon, the way it is in the rest of the world (except in the oil producing countries) most SUV drivers will just shrug and will pay this and will keep their toys. From where they will take the money? Charge their credit cards, of course. To the delight of the card issuers. Hey, if the country can run on deficit why can't individuals play Scarlett O'Hara "I will think about it tomorrow?"
