The sign on my neighbor's house..
When my daughter and I left the house this morning there were red and blue balloons, red, white, and blue streamers, and signs "This is Bush Country", "Bush/Cheney", and "Vote Bush".

They had never had a political sign up in the 14 years I've lived here, other than supporting a school levy. I was shocked. My daughter was going to make a sign that said, "But Kerry Country starts here."

I was gone all day, when I got home, most of the signs were down, but it was too dark to read the one that was still up. My daughter told me that during the afternoon she saw that someone had taken all the signs down except the one that said, "Vote Bush" had been changed to read "Vote Kerry". She went over to the neighbor's house to tell them, thinking that vandals might have damaged the sign. (What a good kid. When I asked her why she did that she said, "Well, I wouldn't have liked it if someone had changed our Kerry/Edwards sign." Who raised this kid?)

It turned out that the neighbors are Kerry supporters and their son-in-law had come over and put all the * signs up.

Sometimes it pays to wait a few hours before reacting.

5. What an asshole. If I were them I'd sit him down and explain
a few things about common manners, but it's probably too late since he's a grown man.

6. What a great practical joke, if indeed it was.
As the queen of practical jokers, I just don't think I could pull that one off.

10. Yeah, it's so over-the-top
that it really sounds like it was a practical joke. Especially if the neighbors really hate *. Hell, I answer my phone "Bush/Cheney campaign headquarters" just to get a rise out of my friends. But putting up signs? Oohh, that's a truly EVIL practical joke. Yeah, I don't think even I could go that far and that's saying a lot. But damn. Now ya got me thinking of B/C'ing some of my friend's yards. (Kind of like T/P'ing but worse.) Oh man, just the thought of picking up a B/C sign disgusts me. Do they give them away for free? I sure wouldn't give them money for one but if they give them away for free...hmmm...

Mixed messages from Ft. Bend County voters

In the neighborhood of the 22nd District, sometimes what is side-by-side can seem to be a political contradiction.

In Ft. Bend County, there are signs of unprecedented political interest.

At Republican headquarters, the big demand is for Bush-Cheney signs. This is longtime Tom DeLay turf and by their count, 600 DeLay signs have headed out.

People here will argue that if Washington's most powerful politician is having to exert a little more power at home this time, it's because 30 percent of DeLay's district is new.

They discount DeLay's string of personal and ethical controversies.

"I think the more people hear of the accusations that have been brought around and uh, some of the unkind things that have been said about him, the more determined they are to get in here and support him," says Linda Hancock of Ft. Bend Victory 2004.

Political analysts continue to give DeLay an edge in the race. His campaign staff says DeLay himself will be in the district this weekend to campaign.

He may come across a scattering of other political signs of the times such as Bush-Cheney signs coexisting with Richard Morrison signs. Democrat Morrison has worked what is often considered the heartland of Republican voters, and some Bush voters say they will cross over.

"It's a fresh start and I think he can add a lot of new blood. He believes in bi-partisan working together. It's kind of an answer as to why there's two different representations in the signs," says voter Tom Suter.

For those with such signs, what seems like a contradiction is the beauty of the American system at work.

11. DeLay: so tight with the devil he makes Dick Cheney nervous.
Even if I was a Republican I would not want that individual going to Congress in my name.

13. That's good to know
Of course I'd prefer them not supporting Bush either, but it's TX, I suppose I wouldn't expect anything else.

DeLay is just a nutcase. I hope he gets booted. Now that would make this one hell of an election:

Kick Bush out
Take Back the Senate
Get rid of DeLay (Of course I wish the dems could take the House back but I don't think it's likely)
