Bumper Stickers and Yard Signs
Do you think they really make a difference in garnering additional votes for the candidate? Do people REALLY decide on a candidate based on how many yard signs they see on the way to the polling place?

Or is it just a way for Kerry supporters to say "hello" to each other on the highway (or in the neighborhood)... and a way to say "fuck you very much" to all the Bush supporters?

1. They make a huge difference to the weak minded
Those who feel that voting is a test and that they have to vote for the winner.

2. yes
I think some people are really just that stupid : " oh dear, if all my neighbors think X is the right choice, then maybe I better think so too". Let's face it, if the electorate were not so damned stupid, this race would not be close at all.

4. I think they make a difference
It's always nice to know who is on your side.
Just like in sports, it's fun to wave to other fans who might share your passion.

5. I like my Kerry/Edwards yard sign because:
It proves that I have an I.Q. at least one point higher than a Cockroach. :)

8. It is a way to see who is on the same side as I am and...
a way to say "fuck you" to the Bush* supporters. Of interest in the neighborhood I live in (179 homes) I have the only "Kerry / Edwards" sign up. Everyone else who has a sign up is supporting Bush* and Satan (I mean Cheney). In fact the day after I put up my sign my next door neighbor but up a "Bush/Satan" sign (I mean Bush/Cheney). Damn, can't seem to get it right (or is that left).

Has anyone noticed that when you do spell check the spellchecker dosen't like "Cheney", wants to change it to "Chaney."

10. Those yard signs have been used for as long as I can remember
Every election cycle, the candidates have those signs put up, not in "yards" but up and down all the main roads in town. I live just off a pretty major "strip" and the side of the road is cluttered for miles with these things. I just assume they must have some effect, or the candidates would't waste the money.

And bumper sticickers are just a moving version of the yard sign. If the yard signs have an effect, then the stickers would too.

btw, I don't remember any Gore/Lieberman stickers/yard signs (actually in people's yards) from 2000, but I am seeing as much, if not more, Kerry/Edwards stickers, and by far more Kerry/Edwards yard signs. In my mom's subdivision last week, there are at least 5 households with Kerry/Edwards yard signs. I have yet to see a bush sign.

I live in SC, btw.

11. A friends 90 year-old grandmother
Is voting for Kerry but won't put a sign out because she doesn't want to upset her friend across the street who's Pro-B*. So I think this says alot about signs and stickers, I just don't know how... :)

12. I don't think they do anything, but...
I am 53 and got my FIRST yardsign today. It sure made me happy!

I came home and showed my husband. He said, "Well, the neighbors are trying to sell their house, and we don't know how buyers will react, so we'll put it up tomorrow!"

16. OMG... Your Bush*/Bundy Graphic Is Very Disturbing
I lived in Lake City, FL in '78 when Kimberly Leach was killed. I'll never forget that time.

That's the perfect association and comparison... Bush is indeed no better than Bundy.

13. Name identification is extremely important in elections.
I would never vote for someone just because his or her name sounds familiar -- but obviously people do.

I doubt this would be as important in a presidential election -- how could anyone not know the two main candidates? But I do think that if someone is on the fence and perceives that a particular candidate has more support, he might vote for that candidate. Same effect that the polls can have on some people, too. A perceived close race may bring out more supporters and sometimes we judge how close a race is by how many signs and stickers we see.

14. it helps
ever go to vote and be confronted with a name you have never seen before? You think, who is this person, and why couldn't they get anyone to put out a sign for them? Also, if there is nothing but signs for one party, people tend to stay home, feeling that the election has already been decided. So put your darn sign out, OK?

15. Don't forget
that some people still don't realize there's an election coming up and they may not even know who currently occupies the office to boot. Sorry, but I occasionally have a dim view of people.
