NYT - Kerry Hears Supportive Voices in a Bush Bastion in Ohio

great article!

...Mr. Kerry listened as Michael Adams told how he and his 138 coworkers at a factory had been given pink slips in September 2003, how he had no savings to draw on because he had been helping his cancer-stricken parents, and how he was still out of work and furious at President Bush.

Then Mr. Kerry picked up an Ohio newspaper from Tuesday and read from its front page how Treasury Secretary John W. Snow had come to town and called reports about job losses under Mr. Bush nothing more than "myths."

"Is your job loss a myth, Mike?" Mr. Kerry said, turning to Mr. Adams. "Mr. President, the people who have lost jobs on your watch are not myths; they are our neighbors, they're middle class Americans, and they deserve better."

"Tell us, John!" someone yelled.

Mr. Snow has said his remarks were taken out of context.

Mr. Kerry had listeners springing from their seats every few moments as he went through his agenda: when he promised to end "in a nanosecond" what he called tax incentives for companies that move jobs overseas; when he vowed to put domestic security ahead of tax cuts for the wealthy; when he vowed to support alternative and renewable energy sources and stem-cell research.

But this was an audience ripe for a negative message, and they roared more loudly when Mr. Kerry scoffed at Mr. Bush, saying "This guy's never in doubt, but frequently in error."

Later, at church in Chillicothe, Father Hummer seemed ready to endorse Mr. Kerry in his homily, too. "We have heard the clarion call," he said, echoing the Kerry-Edwards slogan, "that hope is on the way."

The priest's sister, Anne Hummer, said Father Hummer had a few things in common with Mr. Kerry: both men opposed the first Gulf war, and after the priest was criticized for speaking against it from the pulpit, he entered the Navy as a chaplain and served two rotations.

After the service, Father Hummer urged Mr. Kerry on. "God bless you," he said. "And win, will you?"

15. What's The Difference By Now?
I've always admired Senator Kerry and my vote for him is as firm, if not firmer than any of the Democrats I've voted for since 1976 (I wish I could have voted for George McGovern...I did work for him), I'm also resolute that short of Osama bin Laden, I'd have voted for anyone but the squatter in our White House.

I know some who are just starting to warm to Senator Kerry, but that's just icing on the cake, they hate Bunnypants so much they'll gladly vote against him...and that sentiment is strong. That's the meme Rove is paying Milbanks to debunk...and doing a shitty job at it.

Remember, we had the majority last time and for anyone we lost, 100 have come to join us. We have the votes to elect John Kerry, all we need to is make sure we stay focused and get them to the polls.

4. Awesome
That is definitely Rethuglican territory. Hearing this kind of news makes me question any poll showing * in the lead in Ohio.

6. If the GOP was really confident it had Ohio sewn up ...
its minion Ken Blackwell wouldn't be trying every legal and extralegal means to disenfranchise newly-registered voters. I think they're scared about Ohio -- they have little control, and no idea what things are going to be like here, and they failed at getting Diebold machines in most of the important areas like Cincinnati and Cleveland. It's a free-for-all, for sure, and I don't know how many more ways they can try to screw things up for people who want to hand Ohio to Kerry. I don't think they'll quit trying, but I think they're about at the end of their legal rope, here. They don't have much time to do anything but plan to suppress the Democratic vote by fear and threats. Watch this place and the news on Election Day -- I expect some serious crap to happen here in Ohio the day we vote, especially in inner-city districts.

9. It sure would be nice for anti-abortionpeople to know that his grandfather
had something to do with the formation of the group Planned Parenthood. And Bush never said in the 3rd debate that he would outlaw abortion. I think it's a scam. His own father was for abortion but only in the case of rape, incest or the health of the mother. Why can't these pro-lifers get the story?? Not too many people are completely opposed to abortion in all cases. Either you're 100% prolife or 100% prochoice. Either you believe life begins at conception or you don't and there are no exceptions. That is purely a black and white issue. The Bush's just smokescreen their stances in order to get votes. The only thing that scares me is the appointing of the SCJ's.

11. The official chimp position is that he does not want
tax dollars paying for abortions. Beyond that he gets fuzzy and incoherent. I agree about the SCOTUS, he will try and appoint pro life judges without a doubt.

8. Great article. . .but. . .
I'm concerned that a pastor would that openly endorse Kerry. Yeah, I think it sucks that the Church hierarchy is being assholes. I want them to STAY OUT OF IT. ALL of 'em. Period. I don't think a pro-Kerry clergyman oughtta open his mouth and endorse any more than I think a pro-Bush clergyman oughtta do it.

We can't have two standards. If its a violation of church/state when some Baptist minister (with a congregation) endorses Bush, shouldn't we also be, at the very least, uncomfortable, when a pastor (with a congregation) openly endorses Kerry.

Letting 'em talk in a church is one thing - if both sides are welcome. But for a clergyman to use his pulpit and position to sway his congregation is wrong and I don't care which side does it.

Rant away.

14. Yeah, when we said all that stuff about "taking money from the poor and
giving it to the rich" we were taken out of context, LOL.
