LOL Chicago Tribune out of touch: George W. Bush for president
George W. Bush for president

October 17, 2004

One by one, Americans typically settle on a presidential candidate after weighing his, and his rival's, views on the mosaic of issues that each of us finds important.

Some years, though, force vectors we didn't anticipate turn some of our usual priorities--our pet causes, our own economic interest--into narcissistic luxuries. As Election Day nears, the new force vectors drive our decision-making.

This is one of those years--distinct in ways best framed by Sen. John McCain, perhaps this country's most broadly respected politician. Seven weeks ago, McCain looked with chilling calm into TV cameras and told Americans, with our rich diversity of clashing worldviews, what is at stake for every one of us in the first presidential election since Sept. 11 of 2001:

"So it is, whether we wished it or not, that we have come to the test of our generation, to our rendezvous with destiny. ... All of us, despite the differences that enliven our politics, are united in the one big idea that freedom is our birthright and its defense is always our first responsibility. All other responsibilities come second." If we waver, McCain said, "we will fail the one mission no American generation has ever failed--to provide to our children a stronger, better country than the one we were blessed to inherit."

1. Both of Chicago's papers suck
I'm glad the voters there don't. They're smarter than their newspapers and I'm glad they won't be paying attention to its endorsement.

6. Not as right-wing as the Sun-Times, but yes, the Tribune is solildly...
Republican. Has been since Robert McCormick.

4. Did you seriously expect them to do anything different????
In all my life, I've never seen them endorse a Democrat for president. I don't recall, but I bet they even endorsed Eisenhower over Stevenson in 1952 and 1956.

5. A fucking waste of pulp.
The city of Chicago will go for Kerry by at least 90%. A worthless endorsement. Hell, the Tribune always endorses Republicans, anyway.

7. Well, there go Obama's and Kerry's
chances in Illinois!

We may as well wrap it up and pull out, 'cause there's no chance now.

It was like peeing into the wind for them to do that...but what do you expect from a press corps who gave us...Novakula!

8. LOL! Yeah, it's over for them!
Illinois is SOLILDLY for Kerry. There will be a big turnout here...because of Obama.

The Chicago Tribune won't affect that no way whatsoever.

9. That's right. it was just a dream anyway.
Now back to the harsh realities. Perhaps Keyes won't be such a bad legislater afterall.
When life gives you lemons , put them in the fridge.

10. Novakula was complaining
right before his hip fracture(!) (now, stop gloating!) that the Illinois Rethug party was self-destructing. Sad, very sad.

Yeah I want to see the Sun Times and Tribune endorse Keyes. It exposes them for the shitty papers they are.

Hey but doesn't Ebert write for the Sun Times? He's a good liberal.

Y'all want to know why the Cubs never win?

Here ya go. 1872 ws the LAST time the Tribune endorsed a "Democrat" for President (Horace Greeley.....newspaper editor and "liberal" Republican who also got picked by the Democrats, figures)

This shit about "we have our pet projects that matter to us, but we must put them on hold."

Why? If the milk stinks, throw it out and get new milk.

18. This Endorsement Saves Me Money
My wife and I were thinking we might start subscribing to the Tribune when then endorsed Melissa Bean last week, but reality hit home. We were lifelong Sun-Times readers and just cancelled that paper, except for Sunday (coupons). Surprisingly not long after our cancellation, the Tribune called and asked if we'd like a trial subscription...I told them when they endorsed Kerry I'd take them up on the offer. I can't wait for their next follow-up

Bruce Dold is a total asshole...typical GOOPie...sanctimonius, arrogant and out of touch with this city and his readers. How this oxygen thief can say that the manchild is representative of his generation, while Kerry isn't, and that this loser is "stronger and decisive" after all we've learned about how inept and stupid he is speaks volumes at to whether this paper cares more about their partisanship or their country. That point won't be missed when they call me and try to sell me their fireplace starter.

20. Read the Reason for Tribune endorsing him
Its comical! Seems they are really out of touch. I honestly respect the tribune as a great paper, but this one is beyond me. Seems they are stretching the truth and grasping for lifelines.

at times, the Trib appeared to criticize Bush, but whenever I read those "critical" editorials, I thought to myself, but you're still going to endorse Bush when it comes down to it.

edit: they endorsed George Ryan, too, and not only that, they smeared the lawyer who broke the license for bribe story. :puke:

22. I'm Sure Next Week Orlando Sentinel Will Do The Same
they're a Tribune paper. They'll say some nice things about Kerry but follow the GOP talking points in painting him as wishy washer or a flip flopper.

they endorsed Mel Martinez for Senate because of his administrative abilities, even admitting they disagreed with him on social issues. But a Senator doesn't administer (like a County Chairperson or Cabinet Secretary) a Senator legislates - I feel shaky when I think of the kind of bills he would sponsor.

24. time to cancel
All year I have been telling myself that I would cancel my subscription when they make their (inevitable) endorsement of Bush. This election is far too important to not punish them for sticking with their typical RNC party line.

25. That's funny!! They got it wrong 4 years ago too....
Not surprising really....

Doesn't mean a damn thing though...

Quick question though...How in the world is a news organisation supposed to effectively report on the issues when it endorses one candidate over another and not be accused of bias by the snubbed party?

Bloody stupid if you ask me....

26. Any paper that endorses Bush has no credibility IMO
I can tolerate the occasional Philadelphia Inquirer endorsement of someone like Specter, but if a paper endorses Bush, I refuse to even read that paper.

Hilarious and telling that they gave so much space in their endorsement of Bush over to McCain. It shows you where their enthusiasm really lies...

29. I just cancelled my subscription
I called the Tribune's customer service line (1-800-TRIBUNE or 1-800-874-2863) and told them I am cancelling my subscription, which I have had for many years. The woman asked if it was a vacation cancellation or permanent and I said it is VERY permanent and it is because of their endorsement of Bush for president. I told her I never want their paper in my house again. I asked if she read the editorial yet and she said she hadn't. I told her I was especially disgusted because it essentially says yes, Bush has done a bad job with one thing after another and yes, John Kerry is a good man with a good record, but 9/11 - FEAR - 9/11 - TERROR - 9/11 - BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID!

She asked if I would like to speak with her supervisor and I did. I told her the same thing and that they should read their own damn paper. On the opposite page is a column by Geoffrey R. Stone called "America's New McCarthyism" that starts out: "In the 'war on terrorism' we once again see the manipulation of fear and the corruption of public discourse in pursuit of partisan gain." She asked if rather than cancel my subscription, I might want the contact information for the editorial staff. I told her they will be hearing from me too, but that I will never have the Chicago Tribune in my house again!

I am so mad I am shaking so hard I can hardly type.
