Kerry, in Ohio, Tries Average-Guy Look

Sun Oct 17, 6:52 AM ET

By MARY DALRYMPLE, Associated Press Writer

WAKEFIELD, Ohio - John Kerry (news - web sites) put on brown corduroy pants and a mustard yellow jacket to spend a chilly autumn day in Ohio, just an average guy looking for votes from average Ohioans.

The Democratic presidential candidate started and ended the day by appealing directly for support in one of the election's most important battlegrounds. Between campaign stops, Kerry sold himself as a hunter, a churchgoer and a neighbor.

There were reminders along the way that a presidential candidate isn't just a regular guy.

In Jeffersonville, Ohio, Kerry stopped at Mick and Larry Garringer's pumpkin patch. He sat in a rocking chair on their front porch and sipped cider with former astronaut and senator John Glenn. Ladies lined up for hugs as he left.

Again, they insist the Chimp is a "regular guy," but if Kerry wears that jacket he's pretending somehow. He's "selling himself AS" something. Grrrrrr....

3. I LOVE that jacket and remember it from last spring.
Meanwhile * is wearing some gray rag to match his gray head. Love the contrast.

BTW - if you step back from the story, it isn't wrong. I don't see the word "pretending."

4. AND she says he has a taste for foreign ice cream
snip>
Kerry searched an ice cream cooler for a Haagen Dazs bar. Finding none, he paid $140 for his hunting license and headed to a rally in Wakefield.
--------------

This piece looked like a Goring to me, too, but I checked her other AP work and a cursory read makes her seem more serious than this. Either it's innocent or a new treatment is kicking in.

6. Haagen Dazs isn't foreign
. . .even though it sure sounds it! It originated in New York:

9. As creepy as the article is, it made no mention of "foreign" ice cream.
Unless everyone thinks Haagen Dasz is foreign.

27. A small (imperceptable) joke about the sound of the words
That he didn't settle for anything else was kind of the point of the author's sentence, I guess. Anyway, it made me want to check her other pieces and they looked ok.

7. Sorry folks, but she is right...
a mustard yellow jacket is regarded, in many cultures around the world, as THE definitive indication of a person's proclivity for hating freedom.

14. Not to mention, it often indicates
that the wearer is trying to conceal mustard stains acquired in the process of eating different kinds of fancy French food.

Edited on Sun Oct-17-04 09:54 AM by slor
my friends, though it was alluded to by an observant member. Is John Forbes Kerry cheating on his wife? By wearing a mustard yellow jacket, he is clearly trying to conceal his use of French's Mustard, which may very well reveal his distaste for Heinz Ketchup. That dirty bastard!

19. Oh, my god. Did she just recycle this story
from the primary season, replacing "Wes Clark" with "John Kerry" and "sweater" with "jacket"?

We're electing a president for god's sake. Get with the program, Mary.

20. "Win, will you?"
I like what Father Lawrence Hummer said:
"There are many people who think that the destruction of Iraqi life is as direct an assault on the sacred as is the taking of unborn life. There are many people who regard the death penalty as an admission of the smallness of our nature rather than evidence of our greatness."
"God bless you. Win, will you?" Hummer told Kerry after mass ended.

28. As much as I dislike Maureen Dowd,
Edited on Sun Oct-17-04 10:27 AM by tblue37
she said something intelligent about the conservative archbishops who are calling a vote for Kerry a sin, and what she said applies also to the fundamentalist "Christians" who support Bush because of his antiabortion stand. She called those archbishops embryo-centric.

It's true. The only lives they seem to care about are embryos, and "violence" matters only if it is done to an embryo, even if that embryo consists of only a few cells and is no bigger than the head of a pin.

24. Some people have a difficult time understanding
that money does not always define who you are. Kerry
was raised with privilidge but has "class". That certain
something that manages to avoid arrogance by being rooted
in true humility. The Bushes have money but no class,
in fact I think they are "white trash" but have escaped
the poverty usually associated with that term.

32. Puh-leeze. Bush is about as far from a "regular guy" as he can possibly
be. I still don't understand how he sold himself as an average Joe, when he has shown so much contempt for average Joes during his career.
