9. I'm from Canton. I can't believe they endorsed Bush.

It is a traditionally conservative paper, but my parents were almost sure it would go the other way. The Repository is Stark County's #1 paper. Stark County is bellweather, and has voted by a slight margin for the winner in every election since 1964.

Political questions get around 1300 to 1500. In the last hour and a half Agree-73, Disagree-277. CNN even mentioned the Repository on air, said it might hold more sway than a large paper. Guess they never read it.

14. Local endorsements usually backfire

I also heard that comment on CNN that the Canton newspaper's endorsement might hold more sway than the larger ones. Apparently CNN's talking heads don't understand small-town thinking.

Usually, because there are so many axes to grind with the local paper, people actually vote the opposite of what the paper endorses. The thinking is often along the lines of "Who in the Sam Hill do those ignorant know-it-alls at the paper think they are trying to tell me how to vote?"

I know a lot of people who take pleasure in voting down anything the local papers promote. It's just our contrary nature, I guess.
