Hannaford Resumes Advertising on Sinclair
The biggest flip-flopper award in the presidential campaign so far may go to the Maine-based Hannaford supermarket chain.

Hannaford said Thursday it would yank advertising from a Portland TV station planning to run the controversial anti-John Kerry documentary next week. Then, Hannaford reversed itself, saying it wouldn't pull its ads from WGME-TV (Ch. 13) after all....

A Hannaford spokeswoman told the Portland Press Herald in yesterday's edition that it was pulling WGME ads because ``we object to being positioned politically.'' ....

But yesterday Hannaford said it had ``reversed its decision.'' The supermarket operator, with about half a dozen stores in Massachusetts, offered little to explain what happened, though it appeared somebody goofed.

1. They were threatened by repugs with feces on produce.

and now they pull this.

Bashing a veteran, US Senator, and presidential candidate seems to be alright in their book, I guess.

4. Delhaize Group owns Hannaford - boycott their other stores!
Edited on Mon Oct-18-04 01:16 AM by SheWhoMustBeObeyed
I thought Hannaford was still independent but it was bought by Delhaize Group, a Belgian company.

Other US chains owned by Delhaize:

Food Lion - located in 11 Southeast and mid-Atlantic states

Kash 'n Karry - located in west central Florida. They are transitioning to a new store concept that is already in place in some markets: Sweetbay Supermarkets

Harvey's - located in south and central Georgia.

If there is a Delhaize chain in your area, let them know you are extending the Sinclair boycott to them until Hannaford unflips its advertising flop.

6. This is the message I sent to Hannaford.
I have been a life long customer of Hannaford Supermarkets. I was very impressed when I read that Hannaford had decided to pull their ads from the Sinclair station in Portland, Maine because I feel that showing the anti-Kerry documentary right before the election is illegal and very partisan. The Sinclair Group is preempting all local broadcasts to show it. I have also learned that the Sinclair Group has given 97% of it's contirbutions to the Republican Party. No one can convince me that this is not a campaign contribution by Sinclair who has the means and the format to control this election.

Now I have learned that Hannaford has decided it will continue to advertise on WGME Channel 13 in Portland. I find this very disturbing and I feel Hannaford is aiding and abetting the Sinclair Group in this disgusting endeavor. Because of this, I will no longer shop in any Hannaford store and I will encourage my family and friends to not shop there either. That will be easy in Waterville because we have a newly enlarged Shaw's Supermarket, and with the recent purchase of Shaw's by Albertson's, the sales they have help to stretch my food dollar. Also, a new Wal-Mart Superstore, that by the way is in Hannaford's backyard, will soon be opening. By continuing to advertise on Sinclair, you have made my decision very easy. I will also be selling my Hannaford stock because I want nothing more to do with your stores.

7. We should make sure all of the colleges in the area know about this...
My brother-in-law is in his sophomore year at Colby in Waterville, where there are two Hannaford stores. I imagine a lot of the students go there on a regular basis. Add in the countless other colleges up there, and there could be quite a consumer base disappearing. :) (I said as much in my letter to them.)
