Elections Chief in Fla. County Resigns (Jacksonville)
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Duval County Supervisor of Elections John Stafford, who was heavily criticized by Democrats because of voting problems in the 2000 presidential election, resigned Monday, citing health reasons.

<snip>

Secretary of State Glenda Hood, the state's election chief, said Bush will appoint an interim supervisor.

In the 2000 presidential election, 27,000 votes were tossed because of misleading instructions on a punch-card ballot. On the presidential ballot, voters were told to choose one person on every page. The presidential ballot, however, took two pages. If a voter followed instructions, the vote was tossed out as an overvote.

The office has been criticized recently because it set up only one site where early ballots can be cast.

Hood announced Monday that two to four additional early voting sites will be added.

1. Sounds like a last ditched effort to screw things up. But I'm jaded.

2. Two weeks before a major election?
Something stinks here. We need to get a close up look at what's going on in Duval County.

3. Appears the house of cards is falling.
There is now a HUGE amount of scrutiny on Duval County, with so many thousands of minority voters disenfranchised in 2000, 2002, and now.

Also, the city of Jacksonville covers a large number of square miles, and yet, only one (ONE) early voting polling place has been created.... miles away from the homes of large numbers of minorities, making it extremely difficult for them to get to the poll to vote early.

Yet, other, smaller cities have multiple early voting locations by comparison.

It is very clear that the Republicans are operating on 2 levels:

1. Playing to their base.

2. Depressing voter turnout.

These criminals are NOT going to get away with it this time.

Count on it.
