How many EVs will we get in Maine? |
|
I know you Maine-iacs have a wacky system.
Are we on board for all 4 this year, or will we lose one?
I think George Jr. got one in 2000.

It's popular winner takes 2, then the winner in each congressional district takes 1, right?

. . . that's my understanding of how it works. So the state can either go 4-0 for one candidate or split 3-1. A 2-2 split isn't possible.

8. This is true that there are a lot of traditional republicans |
|
in Maine. Most Mainers are not neocons or crazy evangelicals, however. I have a feeling that these two types of republicans are going to be the only ones voting for Bush.
Mainers are not rich and they are not fond of big business. They also tend to not be very religious. If they are religious, they are very private in about it. It is not acceptable to be publicly vocal about your religion in Maine. For example, most Mainers would consider it rude for a stranger to ask them if they went to church. I've noticed people don't find that sort of questioning to be rude in other parts of the country. I think most Mainers value separation of church and state.
Most Maine republicans tend to be moderates. People in other more conservative states would probably consider them liberal. I think the reason why a lot of Mainers are conservative is because they don't like big government. They want to have more control over their own lives. They also believe in being fiscally conservative, meaning they don't want their hard earned money wasted. They want more say in how the government spends their money. I think most them can tell that Bush has increased government bureaucracy and he has wasted tax payers dollars.

4. It is unlikely, and it didnt happen in 2000.... |
|
and If it did, it would be 1EV at best.
The most likely place where EV's will be split are Colorado.

7. At least three, probably four |
|
I think the chances are slim of Bush winning the 2nd congressional district, so four is probably the most likely number of EVs coming from Maine. While the 2nd district does have many square miles of rural "red" places in it, I hope that the masses in the Lewiston/Auburn and Bangor areas will offset those people out in the sticks.

There are some strange sorts of people in Lewiston/Auburn area. I think there are probably more liberals living in the sticks than there are living in Lewiston/Auburn. Bangor area will probably have a lot of votes for Kerry. The University of Maine is in that area. There are lots of liberals at that school.

11. Lots of Catholics in the L/A area. Odds are they will vote according |
|
to the abortion and homosexuality issues, UNLESS they also happen to be Union folks, in which case it's iffier that they would vote for *.

10. Living in one of those "red places" in the 2nd, let me say |
|
its going to be a tad bit purple this year. Kicker is Ques #1 which appears to a lot of folk that vote R as habit.
But signs are good, life long Repugs I talk with are not too happy Bush, don't like Kerry. By my count, strickly unscientific, of the Repugs 1/2 for Bush, 25% as secert Kerry voters, 25% as no-shows or no votes on that part of the ticket.
As for the "masses" south of here, Bah!!!!! Some day we break away and become part of Can-a-da, eh?
:wow:

12. Bear baiting is big issue here, too |
|
I live in the sticks...a very GOP area of the Second CD. I'm hearing from life-long Republicans that they can't support * this year. People who have ALWAYS voted GOP. I'm very encouraged.
I seriously think we can win all 4 EV's. Waterville's in the Second CD now. I think the cities will help. Bad news is that I was talking with someone doing a union canvass in the Dover-Foxcroft area who had very poor response from the Dems in the area. That's a bit scary.
If one goes by the number of bumper stickers, Kerry has it in a landslide! :D
