A Private Moment with Kennedy and Kerry
The Luck of the Irish

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass) shared with reporters what he described as a "private moment" with Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) as he campaigned Saturday in Iowa with the Democratic presidential candidate.

"John, did you ever think when you were a young man that you would grow up to be a hero in Vietnam, get elected to the United States Senate and be a candidate for the presidency of the United States, a winning candidate?" Kennedy said he asked Kerry.

"He said, 'No -- boy, am I lucky,' " Kennedy recounted. Then, Kennedy said, Kerry turned to him and asked, "When you were young, did you ever think that you would grow up to be the uncle-in-law of an Austrian-bodybuilder Republican governor of the state of Cauli-fooor-nia?"

"I said, 'No, but aren't I lucky?' " Kennedy said.

Staff writer Ceci Connolly contributed to this report.

1. kennedy's a good endorsement, but Dean's still beating Kerry in MA polls
even on Kerry's home turf.

3. I would be horrified if he didn't get it.
Not that I'm not already horrified at his campaign. Further horrified.

5. A Tale of Two Polls...

...taken in the same place at the same time, one by the Boston Globe, one of the most respected newspapers in the country, the other by the Herald, a very republican loving tabloid.

1. Boston Globe/WBZ-TV Poll conducted by KRC/Communications Research. Nov. 19-22, 2003. N=400 likely Democratic primary voters statewide. MoE ± 5:

Democratic Primary Trial Heat:

Howard Dean 27
John Kerry 24
Wesley Clark 6
Richard Gephardt 5
Joseph Lieberman 4
John Edwards 3
Al Sharpton 1
Dennis Kucinich -
Carol Moseley Braun -
Don't know 30

2. Boston Herald Poll conducted by RKM Research & Communications. Nov. 19-22, 2003. N=424 probable Democratic primary voters statewide. MoE ± 4.8:

Democratic Primary Trial Heat:

Howard Dean 33
John Kerry 24
Wesley Clark 7
Joe Lieberman 4
Dick Gephardt 3
John Edwards 2
Dennis Kucinich 2
Al Sharpton 1
Carol Moseley Braun -
Other 3
Undecided 21

What a lot of people who don't really understand how to read polls don't realize when looking at these are that:

a) both actually indicate a statistical dead heat (you have to double the MoE when looking at spreads between two candidates). Looking at just the Herald poll, you would not be going too far out on a limb to say Dean had an apparent "edge," since the spread between he and Kerry is near the combined MoE. Looking at both together, you could not say with any confidence that either candidate had a real advantage over the other at the time these were taken and

b) both are now a month and a half old, meaning neither one means diddly at this point. It's silly to even talk about them except in the past tense.

good joke kerry. i also like kennedy's answering it with a question "but aren't i lucky"? (it should be noted that senator kennedy was opposed to the recall and to arnold in california, kerry campaigned for gray davis along with the other democratic candidates for pres).
