Tin Man vs. The Scarecrow.... a very interesting story from Zogby... |
|
there is a long article in this week's New Yorker about pollster John Zogby. In it, he tells the story of putting in one of his polls during the 2000 presidential election this question: "You live in the land of Oz and the candidate's are The Tin Man, who's all brains and no heart, and The Scarecrow, who's all heart and no brains. Who do you vote for?" The poll came back 46.2 to 46.2 and Zogby says, "I knew I wasn't going to know what would happen" in the Bush-Gore election.
"BUT I ASKED THIS QUESTION AGAIN TWO WEEKS AGO," Zogby says, "AND THE TIN MAN LED BY 10 POINTS."
Take it for what it's worth.... but I think that is telling us something about how this is going to break. The man with NO BRAINS is going down.

1. Good story; unfortunately the premise is all wrong: * has neither brains |
|
NOR heart NOR courage... He's the Wicked W...

3. John Kerry has more heart and brains |
|
than the entire Bush Crime Family combined.
Tho' the good news is, I guess this means Kerry will win.

4. I got that question. I gave the Neither answer. |
|
To imagine that Bush has a heart is to live utterly in the land of fantasy. Actually, I thought the heart meant Kerry, the liberal.

5. it doesn't matter what those of us on DU think.... |
|
the general population sees Kerry as smarter, Bush as more passionate... and they are telling Zogby.... we'll take the smart one.

to the Tin Man, that he didn't, didn't already have . . .
I am also a Zogby surveyee, and I answered the question and selected the Tin Man.

12. yes.... it's all about "the narrative"..... |
|
this is Karl Rove's secret weapon.... he knows that people need a "storyline" -- simple, continuous, and involving well-known archetypes. The Zogby question gets at the narrative through a familiar story and people answer from below the conscious level -- with their guts. This time, people are saying "need someone smart". It IS good news.
