Schwarzenegger breaks with party and supports embryonic stem cell research
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A43361-2004Oct18.html

SAN FRANCISCO - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger endorsed a $3 billion bond measure that would fund human embryonic stem cell research, breaking with California's Republican Party.

Schwarzenegger, a Republican, also endorsed a separate ballot proposal Monday to dump political party primaries, a change he said would send more moderates to Sacramento, the state capital.

The endorsement of the stem cell research measure comes at some political risk for the governor, who campaigned against California going deeper into debt when he unseated Gray Davis as governor in last year's recall election.

"California has always been a pioneer. We daringly led the way for the high-tech industry and now voters can help ensure we lead the way for the bio-tech industry," Schwarzenegger said Monday.

The endorsement will also put Schwarzenegger at odds with the state Republican Party, which officially opposes Proposition 71, and perhaps the Bush administration, which has limited funding of the research.

12. No he is NOT!

This man actually cares about California BEFORE partisan politics. He knows the only way to revive our economy is to go after biotech and bring back high-tech. He is not a Bushbot and, in fact avoids him like the plague. Coming from me, that's high praise as I was virulently against the recall. I had the opportunity last week to talk to a couple of Dem legislative staffers. They were NOT cool about some of his initiatives but on the whole think he doesn't stink. I as a native Californian and Dem feel that Arnold is a man with smarts. He is in my opinion a RINO. What he does is bring ALL constituencies to the table which is rare in this age of freakazoid partisanship. Note, I am not an Arnold supporter, but he has surprised me by playing straight down the middle and breaking with Bush. This is the Kerry model.

5. He is at odds with most rePukes on a host of issues: abortion, gay
marriage, gun control...the Pukes are just using him as 'star power' while at the same time blasting the Democrats for their alliance with 'Hollywood Liberal Elite."
There is no room in the Puke Party Platform for Ahhhhnold's views or those who agree with him; it's all a sham.

17. He is a two faced LIAR

I am a native Californian.

He tricked the people of California into thinking that he was "Liberal" because he was married to Maria.

He avoided any debates that would cause him to show his real self to the American people.

He is NBTB! No Better Than Bush.

They are twins.

They both speak out of both sides of their mouths and with phony accents.

They are bullies and phonies.

The Republicans are just saying they don't like him.
They would pass an amendment to get him to be President in a heartbeat.

18. that's not true
Please tell me how Arnold's policies differ from any of moderate democrats in congress from red states.

They don't. In fact, he's probably more progressive than many.

He's not a liberal democrat and he sure as hell isn't a conservative republican.

He's really a Republican in name only and much more suited to be a moderate democrat.

Hell, he's probably just as liberal as Feinstein on most of the issues.

19. Yea, Right

See how liberal is in when he runs for President!

Talk to me after this election and see how he lends his voice quietly to support the REPUBLICAN candidates.

If he is so god damn liberal, have him support Kerry.

Did I not see him, and Maria sitting in the first row, at the Republican convention?

He/They are trying to have it both ways.

He is McCain in silk suits.

8. I've never really understood why Arnold thinks he's a Repug.
Sometimes I think it's just for the attention he gets from both sides because he's married to a Kennedy; oh, and the enormous tax refund he got, but really his beliefs are more moderate than most Repugs and lean more Dem than anything. Like I said, publicity means a lot to these people. I'm in CA and did not vote for him, although I must admit he doesn't really bother me all that much, but, as President, NEVER.

9. arnold is not really a republican
He really should switch parties to independent, at least, cause he's no republican.

Ignore the "R" by his name and just look at his positions.

He's a liberal on social issues, pro-choice, pro-gay rights, pro stem cell research.

And he's pretty moderate on fiscal issues.

He would be a democrat in just about every "red" state in the country. There are lots of democrats more conservative than him in congress from "red" states. lots.

20. Could it be because of his own congenital heart defect?
He has one, and passed it along to a couple of his kids, I think.
