What Everyone Doesn't Know About Mary Cheney (Washington Post)

(Hope I typed the link correctly-if it doesn't work please go washingtonpost.com and search for Mary Cheney)

Excellent 10/19 article by Hank Steuver on hypocricy of Cheneys' "outrage" at Kerry re mentioning Mary's lesbian status. Plus interesting background on her and photo of her with her partner, Heather Poe.

"The Cheneys didn't respond to . . .(Republican Senatorial candidate) Alan Keyes' direct insult of their own daughter in Illinois. They have not objected to single right-wing piece of homophobia in this campaign. . . but they are OUTRAGED that Kerry mentioned the simple fact of their daughter's openly gay identity."

The article also details that Mary made a nice living as corporate liaison for Coors beer. Gays were boycotting the beer because of the company's backing of anti-gay initiatives. Mary was hired to go into gay bars (sometimes with Mr. International Leather of 1999, who would wear his chaps and straps) and encourage drinkers to switch to Coors.

2. this is "news?"
wouldn't it be nice if they printed that IMMEDIATELY after the debates?

and, once again, Jon Stewart had it exactly right last night, as he ran one of those segments in which the media endlessly repeated the words Cheney/Kerry/lesbian, over and over and over, showing how utterly corrupt the mainstream media was and ever is

4. Perhaps Dick and Lynne have played right into our hands.

I'm sure conservatives aren't happy about Mary, and moderates aren't happy about GOP hypocrisy.

I wonder what the voters of Ohio would think about Lynne Cheney's lesbian romance novel ? I wonder what the moderate voters in PA think about the fake outrage, and the lack of outrage to Keyes.

6. I'm confident this outrage will backlash.

Said it that night, will continue to say so.

Glad it's starting to happen. People just needed time to realize exactly what Dave Cullen said, "It is not an insult to call a proudly public lesbian a lesbian. It's an insult to gasp when someone calls her a lesbian. . . . You're embarrassed for us. And it's infuriating." It took much longer than I thought for people to realize that their dismay at Kerry's answer was, indeed, somewhat homophobic--that realization used to happen IMMEDIATELY with the press when I first started reading newspapers. I'm glad Kerry addressed the situation early and low-key afterwards.

That said, I'm ready for it to drop. There's more important things to consider in this election other than whether or not the next President said someone was gay.

12. The way to deal with this Mary Cheney thing
I think, is to defend it aggressively based on the understanding that there is really nothing wrong with what John Kerry said.

If someone, like the president says that it was over the line, they need to be confronted on why they think it was. I have yet to here anyone in the media or on the right say what specifically was wrong with mentioning Mary Cheney in the debate.

Consider, all candidates routinely tell stories of people they know who are dealing with issues in their life. We've all heard them. (For example - Pres Bush - "I was in the hospital with Private so and so who lost both legs in Iraq and he told me he thought I was doing a great job". or "I talk to small business leaders like Bill so and so and he tells me how much the tax burden affects his ability to hire more people). Does anyone think these people feel that it was "over the line" to mention them by name.

To me Mary Cheney is just another person who Kerry was using as an example of someone who's rights, as president, he would defend. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Is there anyone who can argue that Mary Cheney does not deserve to be recognized as a person whose rights should be fought for? I really don't think so.

13. The Cheneys et. al. are DELIGHTED about Kerry's statement -
It gives them the chance to act indignant, call Kerry names, impune his motives. They may even be partially right about his motives. But they have no right to complain, as they certainly know how to dish it out. Pickles was on ABC this morning doing her indignant act. Boo Hoo Wah wah.
