Dean Counterattacks
Accuses rivals of lacking leadership on Iraq, not fighting Bush

Mount Pleasant, Iowa - After weeks of fierce attacks from those vying for the Democratic presidential nomination, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean struck back dramatically yesterday, accusing his rivals of lacking leadership on Iraq and failing to fight President George W. Bush on other issues.
Dean went on the offensive, answering a barrage of charges leveled by opponents, specifically naming Rep. Dick Gephardt of Missouri, Sens. John Kerry of Massachusetts and John Edwards of North Carolina. He even mentioned retired Gen. Wesley Clark, who early in his campaign said he probably would have supported the war authorization, comments he quickly disavowed.
Dean's comments - delivered at two colleges, a senior center, a Chinese restaurant and during a news conference - reflected a tightening race in Iowa and nationally and represented a dramatic shift in tactics. Previously, he had refused to answer rivals' criticisms, but the change came after he was forced to fend off a series of charges about his commitment to racial diversity and his position on taxes during a key debate held Sunday.

"We're not going to put up with this anymore," he said. "We've been attacked by everybody, including the establishment news media, the establishment candidates from Washington. This is your time to fight back."
