Marijuana "petition" actually voter registration form
By: MARGARET GIBBONS , Times Herald Staff 10/19/2004

COURTHOUSE - Montgomery County Community College (MCCC) students recently received a real-life lesson: Do not sign something unless you thoroughly read it.

Students, who last month signed a petition that was being circulated on the Blue Bell campus to legalize marijuana for primarily medicinal purposes, now are finding out that they are registered Republicans.

"This is just very disheartening," said Plymouth resident Jennifer Fugo, a 24-year-old continuing education student who describes herself as a "victim of voter registration manipulation."
"Everyone is encouraging young people to register and vote and then they experience something like this," Fugo said Monday. "This is just outrageous."

Fugo, who had been living in New York, this summer returned to the area and, in August, had her voter registration transferred to Plymouth. Her new registration card at that time correctly listed her party affiliation as a Democrat. Imagine her surprise last week, said Fugo, when she received a new registration card from the county that listed her as a registered Republican.

2. An explanation
Perhaps this explains why Palast was saying the Repub registrations are way up. They're just "converting" all the Democrats with these kind of sleazy tactics. WOuldn't surprise me one bit. WE've read this stuff before. I take heart, actually, because it does make me wonder how many registered new Repubs will be voting Kerry just because of this!

3. I am confused...college Republicans now advocate legalization?
maybe they are actually closet libertarians.

5. I think it was just bait and switch....doesnt matter though
make them think they are doing one thing (regardless of whether or not you support it), when really they are doing something else.

It really doesnt matter though...who gives a shit if they got someone to register Repub??? The registration isnt a vote and in the general election, the ballot isnt partisan. They can fix the affiliation later. What matters is how and if they vote.

7. I wonder how many of the "newly registered Republicans"
have been signed up in such a manner and will not be voting GOP in November.

Also curious about the effect of the stoned slacker effect on future rethug primaries...

8. It could matter.
If the repug can show a heavy repug registration, and then a heavy dem vote, it will give them the opportunity to scream fraud. If they can keep the fraud charges floating long enough the decision will be turned over the the (republican) congress.

Don't cut them any slack.

They will cheat any way they can.

4. If they're not reading what they're signing they deserve what they get.
Imo.

9. That's weird.
This doesn't have the mark of Republican Weaselism on it. If this were a real Republican move, those Philly-area students would have found themselves registered in Erie, about five hours away, or stricken from the rolls entirely.

Where is the malicious disenfranchisement which is the hallmark of Republican Get Outa Here Voter campaigns?
