Dean fights back: "I'm tired of being the pin cushion here"
Dean Feels Heat From Rivals, Shoots Back

By NEDRA PICKLER
Associated Press Writer

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (AP) -- Front-runner Howard Dean, feeling rivals nipping at his heels a week before the Iowa caucuses, says he is firing back at other leading candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination.

"I'm going after everybody because I'm tired of being the pin cushion here," Dean said Monday.

<snip>

Dean said Kerry, Edwards, Gephardt and former Gen. Wesley Clark supported the war resolution without scrutinizing information from the White House.

<snip>

Clark made a similar claim to being vindicated by O'Neill's remarks. Clark is running as an opponent of the war, but Dean often notes that Clark said two years ago that he would have voted for the resolution and that there was a connection between Iraq and al-Qaida.

I didn't dream you'd bring that back again...
Clark may have asked for help to make sure his answer was consistent with his record, BUT HE ANSWERED THE DAMN QUESTION HIMSELF.
Didn't hide behind the skirts of a campaign worker. Sorry to disappoint you and your good friend Adam Nagourney (how much do you love him today, btw?)

Yes - please do! Show us that vaunted temper, and that "shoot from the hip" style that will keep those "clarification" statements coming.

This is a godsend to every other candidate - they'll use ammo now that they've been keeping dry for weeks.

26. Dean's response, from the same article:
"...Dean said a Dean-Kerry debate would be unfair to their rivals.

"If this really were a two-person race, I'd probably do it," he said in an interview Sunday. "But it's not, and I'm not going to make it into one by agreeing to it. I don't want to get into that kind of decision-making. That's up to the voters."

Joe Trippi, Dean's campaign manager, said other candidates "have boisterously stated their differences" with Dean at debates. Furthermore, Trippi said, when Dean was "an asterisk" in the polls, he insisted that everybody be included in debates. If Dean were to accept Kerry's offer, he predicted, Kerry would probably accuse him of flip-flopping...."

like this is an attempt by Kerry to shove himself up in the polls by going one-on-one with Dean, in effect making people think that he's the only real challenger.

But, what do I know? Obviously YOURS is the only interpretation that could POSSIBLY be right.

If there were to be one-on one-debates, it would not be between Dean and a guy tied for 4th place.

I would imagine Dean would debate Clark in NH and Gephardt in Iowa if offered.

Because if Dean is done being polite everything negative Kerry has ever done (and there's a lot) will be thrown in his face. Dean hasn't even been on the offensive. He's played VERY nice. You don't want to see him go on the offensive.

Because they kept going back to others to let them pigpile. In a one on one debate, Dean will shine. These debates have too many people and it leaves people with 30 seconds a pop to talk. Give him more time to talk and watch out.

115. He Was Given Enough of a Chance.
At the very moment that Sharpton forced him to acknowledge that there wasn't any Blacks in his cabinet, Dean had the chance to redirect and point out that there are less than 3,200 Blacks in all of Vermont and that it was a non-issue. Instead, Dean came back with that lame-ass MLK/Trent Lott "joke." I found myself pissed at both Sharpton AND Dean and that moment...

One who thinks on their feet would find 30 seconds more than enough time...

Edited on Tue Jan-13-04 09:25 AM by mouse7
All Dean would have to do is right out of the box as Kerry, "Please explain your position on Iraq."

Kerry has been trying for a year and still hadsn't explained it. There story after story of Kerry endlessly rambling off into nothingness. Come convention time, Kerry will still be standing at the same podium rambling.

Long rambles DO NOT win debates. They're good for getting you CSPAN camera time on the Senate floor, but little else.

99. Here Are Some Answers
"Why won't you debate Sen. Kerry one-on-one, Gov. Dean?"

Prolly 'cuz he wasn't aware that one-on-one debates were necessary while there continues to be SEVEN other candidates. I wasn't aware of it either, to be honest...

"Why do you continue to cast yourself as the lone, principled voice against this war?"

I don't think he does. If anything, he goes out of his way to include Dennis Kucinich and Carol Mosely-Braun in that list nowadays. Probably becuase he's already been smacked upside the head over this in the past...

"Why are you campaigning for THE Washington political job by railing against Washington politics?"

I dunno... Could it be because at least one Presidential candidate does this EVERY FOUR YEARS? It seems awful successful, too. The last guy to use this tactic successfully is currently running the country....

"Why won't you debate the other candidates one-on-one, instead of lumping them all together as 'pro-war'?"

Like I said: he hasn't done this lately. It just isn't true. Kucinich, for example, has always been against this war.

Come to think of it, I'd LIKE to see Dean and the Kooch go at it on this very issue. Somebody has to explain to DK that dropping everything and pulling out of this war immediately (no matter how unjust said war may be) is simply not a good idea. We broke Iraq, so it's our responsibility to fix it. Not to mention that an immediate pull-out can't do a whole lot for U.S. foreign policy credibility. This is the mess GWB made for the rest of us to lie in...

We honestly really do want him to come out attacking. You folks can send him $50 million, it really doesn't matter. We want Dean to come out and engage the candidates in discussion. We want everyone to see whatever personna Dean chooses to use on any given day, only to use a new one the next time out.

Every night, we say our political prayers before we go to sleep: "Please, let Howard Dean sneak away from his handlers long enough for yet another gaffe. Please let him try and engage a Rhodes scholar on the issues, and let him try and defend his ever changing record on all things everywhere."

You guys know Howard well - do you think you could get him to do that for us? Please?

38. No, of course not

He is petrified of Dean. Granted, he's been shot at and been in a war, but that pales in comparison to being face to face with Dean, and watching Howard show his chameleon like ability to change positions at the drop of the proverbial hat.

The Dean campaign listens to its people, right? So, get with it! Send out those "Howard, please debate Wes" emails! Flood the campaign headquarters! Get him out there one on one in NH! #1 vs. #2! Duke it out!

Surely you'll do that much, right?

By ditching debates, do you mean Iowa, or the D.C. primary one??

(You know, the one where Dean put himself ON THE BALLOT and didn't show up??) :)

Was Wes running in Iowa?? :)

I think it would be GREAT to have the two debate, although I think a few other candidates might get just a tad ticked off. How about Howard, Wes and, oh, let's say, Al?? We may have to settle for the upcoming one in Manchester for the time being.

I'll send an email as well - if it happens, I'll bring popcorn. :hi:

32. Both Dean and Clark are brilliant
Edited on Tue Jan-13-04 09:12 AM by mouse7
You don't get through med school being stupid.

Be careful what you wish for. Truely brilliant people are not used to having their intelligence challenged. Dean has survived for over a year. Clark has only been tested a couple of times in debates, and Generals are definitely not people who are forced into spur of the moment situations where their wits are tested. It's been a decade since Clark was tested as anyone's real subordinate on a daily basis. Dean's simply more practiced than Clark at this point.

surfacing, showing Dean praising bushco and company and linking Al Queda to Hussein, or waffling a half a dozen times on his stance on the war. Throw in the useful information uncovered about his lobbyist activities and the fact he voted for four out of the last five repub presidents, as a Howard Dean supporter, I'm not in the least concerned, but maybe you should be.

49. Been to the south?
I live in the south and have my whole life. Click on a profile before you make an assumption about somebody.
I'll take a little anger over the "I just can't be bothered to show up for a debate" kind of attitude.
As far as the anger issue, it's completely overblown. I was a little angry this morning myself when I woke up and saw that another helicopter had been shot down in Iraq. Should I suppress my anger or could it be considered righteous at this point. Maybe you should be a little angry yourself about the lies bush* told that took us into an illegal and immoral war, then try to muster up a little "anger" about the 500 US soldiers killed and the 2000 others maimed and permanently disfigured and disabled, and then try to muster up a little more anger for the 22,000 dead Iraqis.
Angry, you bet and if my candidate is a little on the angry side, that suits me just fine.

I live in Vermont now, but I've lived in 3 southern states and the people in the south are no different than the people in the north. We all care about the same things and have the same needs. Personally, I find it really silly when anyone claims southerners are so different. It's hogwash. We all need jobs. We all need healthcare. We all need a place to live. We all need good schools for our kids. We all want to live ourown personal American Dream.

58. The electoral map just shows
that Democrats need to actually try to win in the south instead of conceding defeat. For as long as I can remember the idiotic conentional wisdom has been "attract southern voters by running a southerner." Sorry, but that really doesn't cut the mustard. It doesn't matter where a candidate comes from, what matters is whether or not he or she addresses the actual issues people care about. It's really not that difficult.

Edited on Tue Jan-13-04 10:53 AM by DancingBear
Every one of here is angry. What you have done, perhaps unintentionally, is ascribe to me the "non-real Democrat" label that Dean supporters like to use at times.

Do I feel less anger than you? Do I weep less at the sight of young kids coming home in metal boxes under the cover of darkness? Is my patriotism somehow less "valued" because I choose to not follow your candidate? You should be ashamed at such a comment.

If you truly believe this, I feel for you, for you have taken the us. vs them mindset of the right, stuck a doctor in front of it, and proclaimed it just fine, thank you.

With regard to the south, I live here as well, but not as long as you. That said, I know full well the political consequences of Howard Dean in the south, as do many many people who can OBJECTIVELY look at regions of the country. Why did Cleland lose in Georgia? Why does Lott own Mississippi? Why can Kennedy win in Massachusetts, yet not in Alabama? Is Berkeley the same as Birmingham? The reasons are simple, and the strategy even more so.

If you want to run an angry man, fine. Just don't expect those of us who realize the folly to jump on board, and when the results come back with an (R) throughout the south don't pretend you don't know why.

67. Dean lies again: "When people attack me, that rejuvenates me."
In this article, Dean says "I'm going after everybody because I'm tired of being the pin cushion here," Dean said Monday. But a different article in the NY Times quotes the other side fo Dean's mouth:

"I am rejuvenated and ready to fight," he said. "When people attack me, that rejuvenates me."
Surges by Rivals Put Dean on the Defensive in Iowa
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/13/politics/campaigns/13DEAN.html

So basically, Dean is "tired" of being "rejuvenated" by the attacks which make him feel like a fighting pin cushion.

83. when you are sick and tired of something
what do you do? Do you sit on your ass, or are you motivated to do something about it?

You are playing with the word "tired" as if it means he wants to go to sleep. Being tired of something can be a great motivator, so sorry if you don't like the words that come out of his mouth, but please.

"I'm tired of the Democratic Party not standing up for what it believes in" - who said that - and then had his campaign take off? Was there not some rejuvination involved there?

Who did the "sleepless" summer tour. I'm sure they were "tired" during that as well.

You are doing what Rove does, twisting words and logic beyond any comprehensible logic. It's really disgusting.

This time look up "rejuvenate". From www.dictionary.com :

"1) To restore to youthful vigor or appearance; make young again.
2) To restore to an original or new condition: rejuvenate an old sofa.

3) To stimulate (a stream) to renewed erosive activity, as by uplift of the land.
To develop youthful topographic features in (a previously leveled area). "

So are you saying that Dean's "original condition" was "interest and patience exhausted"?

76. He's getting what he asked for
He wants to use words like calling members of Congress "cockroaches" and then he screams at the top of his voice that he is being attacked, he deserves it.

He wants to spin Kerry's stance on Iraq (which was identical to his prior to the invasion) so fast that it looks to be the exact opposite, the whine and complain about being attacked, he deserves it.

He wants to go out of his way to insult the other dems in ways I can't even list here (I know what his people have said about Clark, and its just plain below-the-belt), then he deserves what he is getting.

If he wants to win the primary by smearing everyone else in the running, he can, but if he expects to come out unscathed in the process, he's going to have a rude-awakening if there ever was one.

86. Let me tell you something about weakness
because Dean doesn't have it.

Dean was the only one with the courage to stand up to party leadership when it was clearly failing.

Dean and Kucinich did not support a popular war because they knew it was the wrong approach.

Dean has built the strongest organization of any of the candidates without relying on Washington insiders to create his image.

He's not selling a product (ie "himself" or his "resume"), he's empowering people to take back their country from a culture of corruption and appeasement in Washington. He relies on his record as proof that he can get things done.

Dean is his own man, says it like it is, and is responding to months and months of innuendo, lies, distorions, and attacks coming from every direction.

When you get this kind of response, you know you must be doing something right - so he is defending it. It is not "Weak" to defend yourself, it is what Dems have failed to do since George W. Bush lost the popular vote to Al Gore.
