So before you "Reverse Rednecks" start jumping on NASCAR because of Daryl Waltrips inane ramblings about Dubya, remember that the biggest star in NASCAR seems to one of us.

From KOS:
Junior's F9/11 Shocker

Scion of the Earnhardt clan, NASCAR's #8, Dale Jr., has gone and recommended "Fahrenheit 9/11" as something "all Americans should watch."

Now, I'm no NASCAR fan, but it seems to me that this is a brave, contrarian stance.

I know he's taking heat for it, too, from the more conservative elements of his fanbase, so went to Junior's site and thanked him. Might be nice if you did the same.

3. And, as a reminder,
there are some of us here who actually like NASCAR for its auto racing and not so much for its corporate politics. I say "corporate" because there are drivers, owners and pit crews who, believe it or not, are just like us politically speaking. A few of them may even be lurking here.

14. Yes, my son-in-law is a NASCAR fan who protested at SCOTUS the day

before the Selection. He had great fun periodically infiltrating the Bush*-Cheney ranks and getting them "off" their chants by changing a word or two, then rejoining my daughter in the Gore crowds.

The two of them were about to get filmed for television news when Jesse Jackson showed up and all the news crews went to film him. Sic transit gloria mundi.

9. NASCAR
If only *one* of the high profile NASCAR drivers would step away from the pack, it would open the floodgate for them to finally come clean and speak out.

It would only take ONE of them with the balls to do it to change everything.

Evidently, none of them want to be the first...

10. Good suggestion that we thank Dale Earnhart, Jr., for trying to
wake up some of the NASCAR voters.

A report on MSNBC earlier suggested that NASCAR voters are not so much pro-Bush* as they are Republican voters by habit and inclination. Asked about their voting preferences, they tend to say they vote "for the man, not the party" but asked if they have ever voted for a Democrat, they either have not or can't remember any.

I don't know whether the report is credible but the guy went on to say that NASCAR voters are very concerned with national security and issues related to religion, such as abortion. So it's "God and country," again, the same old misunderstandings from people who don't understand nuance, or the Constitution, very well. I'll bet it's also guns. The NRA is very anti-Kerry, stupidly, of course. My husband is canceling his NRA membership as a result. I hope all progressive gunowners do -- let them have their GOP love fest without our money.

Interesting footnote: I did a spell check because I wasn't sure how many Ls are supposed to be in the word "canceling" but the spellchecker program wanted me to change NASCAR to NA SCAR. WTF?

11. Reality Check Folks*****Jr's own words,"I'm a Republican." READ ON:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/09/27/60II/main645795.shtml

Taken from 60 Minutes interview

snip-

Politically, Junior does side with a voting block known as NASCAR dads. He’s a Republican and he supports George W. Bush. Yet, he took his crew to see Michael Moore’s movie, “Fahrenheit 9/11.” Why?

“I like hearing both sides of the argument. I thought the movie was well done. But my dad was a Republican, and I'm a Republican, and so not that I came out of there going, ‘I ain't voting for Bush again,’” says Earnhardt Jr. “That didn't happen, and I didn't expect that to happen. I just wanted to go and enjoy the movie. Because I knew Michael Moore would try to push a few buttons. And I just wanted to see how hard he mashed them.”

15. Damn, if that's the case, he is a moran -- but at least

he saw the film. If every moran would see the film, some might start to think outside the GOP box.

Maybe Dale, Jr. will someday get over his daddy's influence but considering Dale's untimely demise, I wouldn't think it too likely.

13. You must have missed Little E on 60 minutes when he said he was for Bush.
He also had some stupid statement about women. Not impressed.

By the way, why is it ok for NASCAR guys to stump for Bush--but other celebrities get slammed for backing Kerry? (That's sort of a rhetorical question.)

17. I met Nascar legend Junior Johnson who campaigned w/Erskine Bowles
Nascar legend Junior Johnson went on a bus campaign tour with Dem Senate candidate Erskine Bowles here in N.C. back in August and he spoke about how Erskine has always supported and would continue to support racing in N.C.

I also have a Nascar connected friend who has phone banked and volunteered for the Dems both this year and back in 2000.
