Handful of black leaders in Tennessee backing Clark
Good news for Clark, work for us Dean supporters.

On a day after race became an issue again in the Howard Dean presidential campaign, challenger Wesley Clark picked up several endorsements in Tennessee, including prominent African-American leaders.

...

On Sunday, Dean was challenged on the issue of race relations at an Iowa debate by candidate Al Sharpton.

Under fire, Dean admitted he failed to name any minorities as members of his Cabinet while he was governor of Vermont, a tenure of almost 12 years.

''I'm shocked,'' said state Rep. Edith Langster, D-Nashville, who was among those endorsing Clark. ''In this day and age, I can't believe he couldn't find someone.''

Dean activist Deb McCarver, who has helped organize Tennessee volunteers, said she has seen wide support for Dean among African-Americans.

While volunteers were handing out information about Dean in Nashville's Bordeaux area, a car drove by and one African-American called out, saying, ''If Gore's for him, we're for him,'' McCarver said.

It's not a hopeless situation. The trouble is the Tennessean is a hopeless newspaper. Notice no mention of given reasons (VT's low black population and jobs turned down).
