Reversing slide, Kerry regains lead among women, polls show
By Katharine Q. Seelye
The New York Times
Wednesday, October 20, 2004

WASHINGTON Senator John Kerry appears to have reversed his slide among female voters and has solidified his lead over President George W. Bush in this crucial category, new polls show.

In early September, Bush led Kerry among women, 48 percent to 43 percent, in The New York Times/CBS News poll. As of Sunday, Kerry was leading among registered women voters in the same poll, 50 percent to 40 percent.

Other polls show Kerry with a smaller lead among women, but a lead nonetheless.

More strikingly, Kerry has solidified his lead among single women. The Times/CBS poll showed that he is now also leading Bush among women over 50. One of the few categories in which Bush leads Kerry is among women who are married, who tend to vote Republican anyway. But Kerry has shrunk that gap.

As of Sept. 6, Bush had a 27-percentage point edge over Kerry among married women; as of Sunday the gap had shrunk to 7 percent.

And this is by katherine seelye, too..she's not Dem friendly or least she wasn't to Gore and to Kerry earlier.

4. My guess is it was him clarifying his abortion stance
at the last debate. Made Bush look untrustworthy for not answering the question. Kerry's a Catholic, so maybe people unconsciously pair him with his church's stance, despite all the heat he's taken for his disagreement with them.

12. That sounds right to me. IMO Kerry needs to keep mentioning his religious
beliefs, practices, and values EVERY DAY for the next two weeks. I really thought what he said at the last debate would resonate with swing and fence-sitting "Christian" voters: having been an altarboy, how "works" are far more important than ostentatious displays of "faith", and how his battles against poverty and injustice has been motivated by lifelong Catholic values and morals.

If Kerry goes to church more often than George W. Bush, now would be a very good time to play that up too.

7. Your guess is as good as mine - I missed the memo about Kerry trailing
with women. I never knew he was behind. It seems like a positive article though.

8. The dates of the previous survey influenced the results
Notice the final paragraph said "as of September 6." The GOP convention ended Thursday, September 2. Bush gained support among women with the phony patriotic convention speech. Most of them have returned to Kerry or undecided. That September 3-8 stretch was probably the height of Bush's lead for the entire year. Any numbers quoted for that period are not representative.

10. I agree
In fact all of these poll swings are just statistical silliness. The polls change every single day; are we to believe that some large # of people are changing their mind about who they're voting for EVERY SINGLE DAY?

It's ridiculous. Kerry's going to win, I have no doubt about it. The polls are fun to watch, but they don't exactly reflect reality.

11. About time. And someone asked why that suddenly turned around??
..well my guess is the turn around is because the "security moms" (otherwise referred to here as 'bimbos in mini vans', have forgotten the Russian school thing. Hard to keep a thought in some of their minds, you know. Now the are off worrying their pretty little heads about which Haloween costume will be the very best in the neighborhood/school and win their kid all the praise on Haloween day (don't laugh; I have watched this in action and know).
