David Brooks, NY Times twit and Rove mouthpiece, wrote a scathing column about Kerry today. Below is my letter. Please write too if you have the time. You can write directly to him or to the editer, letters@nytimes.com Some snippets:
---John Kerry wasn't nominated because of his sparkling personality. He wasn't nominated because of his selfless commitment to causes larger than himself. He was nominated because he's a fighter. At the end of every campaign he comes out brawling. This was the guy who could take on Bush.So nobody could imagine how incompetent, crude and over-the-top Kerry has been in this final phase of the campaign. --
---Kerry's second wild attack is that Bush would reinstate the draft. The administration, which hasn't even asked for trivial public sacrifices in a time of war, does not want to bring back the draft.---
---Some Democrats have been unable to face the reality that people have been voting for Republicans because they agree with them. So these Democrats have invented the comforting theory that they've been losing because they are too virtuous for the country---
:grr: MY LETTER
Dear Mr. Brooks: Wow, you have really outdone yourself this time. And your writing is getting better. When I read the words "incompetent, crude and over-the-top" I thought you had finally figured Bush out. Imagine my surprise when I found you were talking about Senator Kerry! Yes, you are right, he was nominated IN PART because he is a fighter- I know that was one of the things that drew me to him. However, in contrast to what you would like your readers to believe- and I can understand the desperation now that the election is drawing near- American voters KNOW that Kerry really IS selflessly committed to causes larger than himself, in stark contrast to Bush, who cares only about power, money, and those who give him power and money.
Heavy handed assaults from Kerry/Edwards? KERRY in attack dog mode???? Are you KIDDING? Have you been asleep or in some kind of stupor when Bush and Cheney speak? Did you sleep through the entire shameful, Swift Boat Liars for Bush campaign which, we both know, was funded and supported by the Bush campaign?
This administration "hasn't even asked for trivial public sacrifices" during the Iraq war???? Please apologize to those who have lost their, apparently less than trivial, children to the war. The Bush administration doesn't want to bring back the draft? We'll see, but meanwhile, please also apologize to those reservists who have been required to put in longer tours of duty than the expected, and to put themselves at risk of death, because our all-volunteer Army is apparenlty being stretched too thin to provide reinforcements.
As for your points on stem cell research- well I guess I'll just defer to your medical experience.
Rather than spend any more ink pointing out the "ludicrousness" ( you seem to like that word today) of your positions, I'll skip right down to the end of your column. I hope and pray that you are right when you say: "voters are not idiots. They are capable of independent thought. If you attack your opponent wildly, ruthlessly, they will come to their own conclusions. " If you are, Kerry will win in a landslide. Then, maybe, you will have to find another job.
