2. I agree !
the "Media" keeps comparing this ad to the Kristen Breitweiser ad as if they're "equal"

and I keep thinking man (or -- wo-man) -- if people think that those ads are equally effective, I'm outta touch.

Bush: I hugged a girl effectively
Kristen: Bush failed to prevent - or permit full investigation of 9/11

who CARES who he hugged if he shared responsibility for our failure to stop it????? Is a hug supposed to make it better????

...need another glass of wine - every time I THINK about this my BP rises.

6. great point
Kerry risked his life to save a Green Beret
Bush took a minute or two out of his time to hug a girl.

Man, Bush is by far the better man.

Not that it was a photo op or anything. He didn't even notice the cameras, I'm sure. Just happened to be lookin' at 'em. :eyes:

15. Actually, it is probably an effective ad.
It won't convert any DUers, but we are beyond the reach of any Bush commercial. Unfortunately, most folks around here are so partisan that they have lost the ability to be objective, and can't realize when the other side scores a hit.

Some Kerry supporters are barely Kerry, just as some Bush supporters are barely Bush, and a few still undecideds. Many people can be touched by an illogical, but very emotional appeal. (Hey, that's how Madison Avenue makes its living.)Ohio is a close state, and if the ad sways only one voter in a hundred, that is a full point, and maybe the election.

17. I saw the ad with an independent friend..
and he laughed and rolled his eyes.

Maybe it is targeted at "security mom" types, but I'd hate to meet the person who fell for that nonsense.

12. That was remarkably chilling.
I just copied your link and sent the following e-mail to my parents, my aunt and uncle, and my sister, all of whom are voting for Kerry, and all of whom are in swing states.

Hey All,

This is a recent ad produced by one of those 527 groups allowed under campaign finance law. Watch it here:

http://www.ashleysstory.com/

I hope I didn't surprise you by sending you a Bush ad, but this is something I must say I've never seen before. President Bush deserves re-election because he gave a girl a hug. Yep, a hug. Forgive me, but if this isn't the most cynical, manipulative thing I've ever seen, then it's awfully close.

I can't believe the entire argument for a President's re-election campaign has become a naked appeal to emotion. I shouldn't say I can't believe it, because I know he's been cornered against his own record these days for the things his Administration has done and failed to do. What I should say is that it's hard to believe a President has fallen this low and seems so desperate.

Even Nixon had more going for him, didn't he? I mean I was awfully young at the time and don't remember, but didn't the man have at least a few feathers in his cap when he was forced to resign? And even he didn't resort to anything like this.

First, it scares me to think what they might be hiding if they're this desperate. But second, it frightens me more when I think that the sort of approach this ad is using is actually working on some people. What has happened in this country when just about half the population (according to the polls) are saying that they will vote for this man? What are they thinking? Are they thinking?

Sorry for the rant, but seeing this has affected me. Pretty spooky stuff right around Hallowe'en.

Keep in touch,
(NinetySix)

20. Was wondering
Is the narrator in that commercial the guy who does the voice for the Miller High Life commercials? Seems to me I've heard him do other Republican ads.

And what's the "story"? It's not even about her at all - she's just another victim.

19. BOUGHT AND PAID FOR BY BIG CORPORATE DONORS!!
You know.. I think it's unbelievably sad that this girl lost her mother.. I'm not going to make jokes about Bush hugging her. What a terrible thing to live thru.

BUT.. if you do a bit of research on the people PAYING 14 MILLION to air this little ad.. you get cynical. Alex Spanos Construction gave 5 Million. Amway? 4 Million. Ameriquest Mortgate? 4 Million. It makes me ill to see how even this own girl's father is exploiting this tragedy. A foundation to spread "God's love" in the name of the deceased woman? They're asking for donations, but really haven't anything to say about WHAT they're doing with the donations. Dad's a marketing consultant and big time republican.. and that he is allowing his child to be used by the corporate whores, is just deplorable. Corporations peddling melodramatic campaign ads, disguised as spontaneous reaching out to the grieving. Sick.

22. It is a terrible thing to live through. I know.
I lost friends and family in the WTC on 9/11.

But what a much more terrible thing it is for the girl to be put through it again and again by these people, including her own father. Rather than allowing her to heal, they're keeping the wound open in the name of this foundation that is collecting money to "spread God's love".

It is even a more terrible thing for Bush to exploit this to try to shore up his floundering campaign.

25. I thought the same thing -- there's something evil behind the eyes.
If you look at pictures of Kerry with children, there's a connection between them.

But with boosh, there's no connection. In fact, there's a wall of resistance. He doesn't WANT to make a connection, except between himself and the camera. It's always about him.

The day of the first debate, the one he totally flubbed, he had been out "comforting" hurricane victims. There was a picture posted of him "comforting" an African American woman. She had her head kind of half leaning on his shoulder and he had his arm around her. But instead of putting his hand on her, he had his fingers curled under his palm so that only his knuckles touched her. That kind of body language told me he doesn't give a rat's ass.

24. Don't underestimate the power of an emotional ad.
Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 01:06 AM by Silverhair
Folks. Look at most of the ads on TV. Are they logical and reasoned? NO!!!!!!! Logically most TV ads are downright stupid.

Are they effective? YES!!!!!!! They sell the product. ("Got milk? This is not your father's Oldsmobile. etc.) What logic is there in those ads? But they work.

They know they won't sway everyone with that ad. THEY DON'T NEED TO!!!!!!!
If they move 1 or 2% of the voters in the swing states, and help keep their own voters, the ads will have worked, even as you laugh at them.

26. I don't believe in god or jeebus
but damn I hope bush burns in hell. If there is any justice that little girl will wake up in front of a whole crew of microphones and curse furious george for using her and her dead mother. I firmly believe that the boy king hitting office had more to do with the attack on 9/11 than not.

oh my, that really got me cheesed.
