South Carolina Forgives Dean
Voters may give Dean pass on race issue

Howard Dean is likely to get a pass from South Carolina voters for failing to appoint a single black to his Cabinet during 12 years as governor of Vermont, several black leaders and political observers said Monday.
...
Contending that recruiting minorities for high-level posts in state government is difficult in a state that is nearly 98 percent white, one black Vermont leader who met regularly with Dean praised his efforts as governor.

Vaughn Carney, a lawyer and executive with a financial services company, recalled turning down Dean’s requests to serve in the administration.

“He asked if I had an interest or if I knew of anyone who had an interest,” Carney said Monday. “I, myself, was constrained by other commitments. I wasn’t aware of anyone who would be qualified or would be available.”

This is completely a non-issue except for those looking for a way to sink the Dean ship. Keep harping on thing like this and people will just stop listening.

1. We can only hope that this will lay to rest this particular issue.

2. How do you translate "SC MAY Give Dean a Pass" into SC FORGIVES Dean?
Talk about distortion.

12. Ok - How do you translate
"SC May Give Dean a Pass" to "SC Gives Dean a Pass?"

Your heading mischaracterized the article.

7. what a misleading headline
a couple of Dean drones give him a pass and you conclude the whole state has forgiven him??

one quote in the article is more accurate

“That’s not just going to hurt him here,” Ford said, “it will destroy him.”

10. True it IS misleading, as there's nothing to forgive.
Dean did nothing wrong.

14. I'm willing to bet that it will have no effect in the election
that this is just an issue that is being blown out of proportion in hopes of doing as much damage as possible.

I'm willing to be wrong, but that is the position I'm staking out on this.

8. Another view from the same article:
Edited on Tue Jan-13-04 10:51 AM by bigtree

“I want the average Vermonter ... to walk into court and see a black judge and think nothing of it,” he (Dean) said. “I want the average Vermonter to go to the Environmental Board and see all different hues ... because race has nothing to do with that.”

But not applying that same theory in selecting his Cabinet will be a problem for Dean, said state Sen. Robert Ford, D-Charleston, who supports U.S. Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina for president.

“That’s not just going to hurt him here,” Ford said, “it will destroy him.”

The Democratic Party needs a nominee who can motivate and offer confidence to black and white voters, Ford said. Dean has proven an inability to do that.

Come on, bash this guy as a racist, as bullshit, or for a cheap shot as some have done to those on this board who agree with Rev. Sharpton.

11. Interesting...
This is basically what I and a few others were saying on this board yesterday. There are less than 3,200 Blacks in Vermont. Of those, probably none applied for jobs in Dean's SIX-POSITION cabinet. The ones that were asked (and we now know that at least one was asked) didn't even want the job.

I believe I was saying something about this being a "non-issue"...?
