CNN: Black Vote is "Trending" Towards Bush*
Bill Hummer had Jesse Jackson on this AM to push their latest insane bit of bush-licking spin.

Hummer told JJ that a "very respected survey" showed that Kerry has a lower number than Gore did at this time.

JJ looked at Hummer like he was a mouse turd in his oatmeal and basically said: NO, you idiot.

Hummer wasn't through whoring though. Started to go on about about * is 'reaching out' to the AA community.

JJ basically said: NO, he's NOT, you idiot. and rips through a list of concerns to the AA community that * has a hideous record on...

typical for CNN these days. first they have a bushbot with no one on for 'balance.' then they try to use JJ to push their "poll" of the day:

1. cnn mislead by comparing polls to actual results when that same poll
in 2000 had gore with about 75 percent of the black votes. al gore ended up getting about 90 percent though.

but cnn didn't mention how the poll showed gore getting less than he actually got.

As an African American voter, I was so totally pissed off about that interview-- it was completely dishonest. And Jesse Jackson didn't even call him on it. This kind of stuff really irks me.

they also didn't mention that among black voters their opinion of bush has gone down much more than it was in 2000. it clearly shows they have an agenda.

2. Actually, I would believe it.
They've been pounding the gay marriage/abortion thing and that is where the very religious blacks part with the Dems. I posted exercepts from a Salon story yesterday about Ohio and their hateful anti-Gay amendment. They have a huge black congregation in those fundie churches and they hate Smirky on everything, except those two things. When asked if they would vote on those 2 issues and for Bush, they say..yes.

Ugh.

That anyone in a minority would object to granting someone equal rights and make it an important enough issue to shoot themselves in the foot. Weird.

Many ultra religious people in the black community
don't see homosexuals as a minority as much as they see them as an abomination. The only way the GOP can win more of the black vote is to appeal to bigotry.

37. Well, Homosexuality IS An Abomination According to Scripture...
...it's all there in Leviticus 18:22.

What the Scripture DOESN'T say is that we should take away, or undermine, the rights of homosexuals. Indeed, it says "love your fellow man." That includes the so-called "sinners," which we ALL are, BTW.

45. Open to interpretation
Anyway, it is the old testament and the new testament was supposed to trump the old. Sure, Paul seemed to have an issue with homosexuality but the big J never mentioned it. I'll go with Jesus - he's allright with me.

54. True, But Paul Didn't Write Leviticus AFAIK...
...I'm also under the impression that no part of the New Testament is meant to "trump" the Old Testament. Both are supposed to be taken in tandem.

But that's entirely different discussion... :-)

64. No, Paul didn't write Leviticus
It is part of the Pentateuch.

Paul wrote against homosexuality in Corinthians I.

Many Christians understand the New Testament as superseding the laws of the old testament (Leviticus). Jesus said there are two commandments now, Love God and Love thy neighbor. Gone are the circumcision laws, the sacrifice laws, the sabbath laws, the law against wearing two types of material, the law forbidding the eating of unclean foods, and even the law against two men laying with one another.

As for the abomination argument, Leviticus also called menstruating women abominations. Goes to show you how smart the establishment was 3-4 thousand years ago, eh?

Of course, this argument has been done to death, and I'm sure it will continue to be discussed until intelligent people of faith figure out that it is as silly to condemn homosexuality because it is mentioned a few places in the Bible as it is to accept slavery because it mentions it numerous places in the Bible.

Back to the original discussion. There are many Christians, both black and non-black that use the Bible to erroneously support their bigotry. That, my friend, is evil. I'm sure you agree.

70. Amen To That. Agree to Disagree.
I usually stop a "homosexual/abominations/kill-'em all" with, pretty much, the same argument: live and let live... love your fellow man. I'd even top it off with "let them sort it out with God when the time comes." Works every time... :-)

And lobster. And cheeseburgers and ribs and bacon. And mixing two kinds of thread together. And not stoning to death people who work on the Sabbath.

Anyone can selectively quote the Bible to support a position they would hold anyway.

I would love to see the scripture that directly tells us to avoid eating cheeseburgers. I haven't found it yet... :-)

I do agree that there are dishonest folks who would misinterpret the Bible for their own interests. They're the same people with no clue as to how to read the Bible. The same is true with the Constitution, BTW...

67. Huh? "Thou shalt not seethe a kid in its mother's milk"
That is the origin of one of the laws of Kashrut (the Jewish dietary laws, known as kosher), that you may not consume meat and dairy at the same time. It's in Leviticus (don't know where).

Observant Jews not only do not eat meat together with dairy, they wait at least an hour or two before consuming one after eating the other. They keep separate plates and utensils. The ultra-Orthodox even have separate kitchens (as do most synagogues).

69. You Might Be Thinking of Exodus 23:19...
Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 01:16 PM by The_Counsel
...which (according to the NIV) says "Do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk."

First, I wouldn't think to make a cheeseburger out of goat meat, but I can imagine there are some in this world who would...

Second, if we took this in context, we'd see that this command is part of a list of instructions for three festivals to be celebrated unto the Lord. I don't think this was meant to be an every day thing, though I could be wrong.

Third, it seems that the goat that is not to be cooked in it's mother's milk was supposed to be sacrificed unto the Lord. To be fair, we should consider our body as "the Lord's Temple"; and therefore it could be said that what we consume is, in a way, "sacrificed unto the Lord."

But again, this is a springboard to a lengthy Bible discussion that would take this thread out of the "General Discussion: Campaign 2004" realm... :P

I am neither African American nor religious, however, I work in an office that is 90% African American (we have about 200 people in this office). Most of these folks call themseles Christians with a capital C. While most of them are far from liberal on all social issues, they are decidedly more centrist than most fundamentalists and above all, know who their friends aren't. While many of the folks I work with will tell you they are reluctant to vote for the dems, they sure don't view the repugs as an alternative.

59. Ummmm. KERRY AND BUSH HAVE THE SAME OPINION ON THAT!
That's why I find the notion that Blacks are going toward Bush over that. Kerry, if anyone saw the debates, believes marriage is between a man and a woman. He supports civil unions, which is essentially what Bush supports when he says it should be up to each State.

I repeat, Kerry SAID he believes marriage is between a man and a woman.

Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 09:33 AM by pbl
They put up a graphic that said: Gore: 90% Kerry: 69% among African Americans voters. Even though the numbers that Gore was being polled at for the survey they used were actually 74% before the election-- they instead used the final tally from what Gore received in the election to make their argument. That was completely dishonest!

Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 10:18 AM by goclark
If you have ever been to Detroit you know there are four black churches on every corner. They are deeply religious in Detroit. This poll shows that they are solid behind Kerry.

I helped to register over 1000 voters in Los Angeles. Less than 1 percent of the Blacks stated they were voting RepubliCON.

I know a few of my friends that are RepubliCON. They are voting for Kerry this time.

As one African American lady told me,"My grandmother told me a long time ago, " Stay Out Of those BUSHES!"

Don't worry about the African American Vote, we know what we have to do to get those Bushes out of the White House.

We need to worry about the White Racist Vote!

I lived in Oakland County for a long time.

Grosse Pointe Vote is probably going a lot Republican but "There Is Hope On The Way." I bet a lot of their children will be voting for Kerry.

Now Upper Michigan is another whole story, not for the Black vote. There are few Blacks there. I am talking Timothy McVeigh country in Upper Michigan. I was up there about four times and that is some dangerous territory.

The brothers and sisters in Southfield and Pontiac are going to be out in large numbers.

I just don't buy the religious argument that Blacks will be voting for Bush. We know he is a racist dog.

Stay warm this winter and bring the Vote Out for Kerry on Nov. 2nd.

24. Oh. GOD...!
"Hummer told JJ that a "very respected survey" showed that Kerry has a lower number than Gore did at this time."

Well duh...

I would think it's hard as hell to beat the NINETY-TWO PERCENT that Gore had in 2000 -- even if the candidate himself were Black...

"Hummer wasn't through whoring though. Started to go on about about * is 'reaching out' to the AA community."

Ri-ight...

Bush "reached out" to the Black community in 2000 also. You know what it got him...?

...a foot dead in his ass, that's what! SEVEN PERCENT of the Black vote, kids. We (usually) know a snow job when we hear it.

Yesterday, CNN had this big headline: "BUSH DOUBLES SUPPORT AMONG AFRICAN-AMERICANS" What they DIDN'T tell us, and hoped we wouldn't figure out, is that 7 x 2 = 14. FOURTEEN. Yeah, Bush is really kicking ass among Blacks...

...NOT!

You know what's funny? After all this spin, Bush is probably STILL going to pull less than 10% of the Black vote when it's all over. Just you watch....

I'll say it again: Kerry will get a minimum of 52 million popular votes and 312 electoral votes. It won't even be close. In fact, these bogus polls will only make his victory even sweeter...

Bush got 9% of the Black vote last time. If he get's 10% this time, it's a trend towards Bush. La-di-fucking-da.

43. As long as the Republicans refuse to condemn the Confederate flag...
...they will never win over large numbers of African-American voters.

They can prattle on as much as they like about how conservative African-Americans like their stances on vouchers, homophobia, etc., but as long as they continue to pander to racist Southern whites by demagoguing on the Confederate flag, most blacks will understand that there is no real place for them in the Republican Party.

Yes, it's just a symbol, but it is as potent a symbol as abortion is on the other side. Democrats trying to appeal to "heartland" voters on economic grounds can't get around the abortion issue, so it's just as fair for Republican outreach efforts to blacks to founder on the Confederate flag.

Of course, it's not really fair, since Democrats on abortion want to protect a woman's rights, while Republicans on the Confederate flag are covertly championing a symbol of efforts to deny black people's rights, but as a demonstration of the power of symbols they are roughly equivalent.

50. Blacks, Latinos and other minorities are deeply opposed to gay rights
even more than whites are. They are angry that gay rights are being equated with the civil rights movement.

This was going to happen eventually, but it would be unfortunate if it has an effect on this election.

In the long run, the Democratic Party has an obligation to support civil rights for all - which includes gay rights - no matter what.

60. Wow.. so there are NO gay miniorities????
Man.. that must be wierd. Seriously, miniorities are against gay rights? I find that hard to believe... gays aren't only white men in San Francisco with great clothes and good jobs. They're everywhere, in every color, in every town, in every family.

74. I understand that, but
minority communities -- especially African-Americans--are very against homosexuality and gay rights, even more than whites are. It is due more to the more traditional views of masculinity and femininity prevalent in minority communities than it is
religion, IMO. These folks know there are members of their own communities who are gay, but it is usually treated as a shameful secret that no one talks about.

This is not to say there aren't minorities who favor gay rights - of course there are. But overall opinion is overwhelmingly against it.

I guess the larger point is that we Democrats face a tough challenge with many within our own party on the issue of gay rights.

56. Not only was the "trending" toward shrub
out of line, then Hemmer manages to get in a blurb about Mary Cheney and the lesbian issue.

WTF?

Why won't CNN let it die?

This story with JJ had nothing to do with Mary Cheney.

66. Want the link to where they got this from??
Go to usatoday.com. I was there and tried to go to the 2004 section and got some form to fill out, blah, blah and got shot back out of the connection. Because it takes so damn long for me to bring these things up, I just didn't go back. If you can do it quicker, please do and see what they say (this story may even be on the first page). It's how Kerry hasn't excited the Blacks and how Bush has done so wonderfully and mulitiplied with them, etc. Let me know what it says. Thanks.

but propaganda channels love to faulty polls to hurt democrats, so it's no surprise thet are running with this again.

72. They're just looking for something to talk about.
They have to make it sound like His Chimpness and Kerry are having a close race, or nobody will tune in.

But wouldn't it be nice if they keep the audience interested w/o the whoring?

After all, blacks have SO many reasons to vote for Bush:

How he handled Haiti
How he handled Darfur
How he snubbed the NAACP
How he snubbed the CBC (Congressional Black Caucus)
His lack of support for affirmative action on MLK day (University of Michigan)

How there are disproportionate numbers of blacks in the army in IRAQ right now

The disaster of No Child Left Behind
Letting the assault weapons ban expire
Not supporting hate crimes legislation while governor of TX
Supporting the death penalty in TX, which has a disproportionate number of minorities on death row

Colin Powell and Condi Rice as fall guys for his incompetence (they shouldn't have put themselves in that position in the first place)

Yeppers, blacks are voting in DROVES for Bush.

:eyes:

And ANOTHER THING: If the vote is TRENDING towards Bush, then WHY in the Sam Hill are the GOP working so HARD to disenfranchise this "trend" in swing states? If blacks all of a sudden had a change of heart, wouldn't the GOP WANT their votes to count?

*sigh* How stupid does CNN think we are?
